Friday, March 4th the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns meet for the second and final time this season. Phoenix won the first match in New York 118-97 on November 26th.
Both teams last played on Wednesday with the Knicks following up their 109-135 loss to the 76ers with another loss (108-123) in Philly while the Suns pummelled the Blazers 120-90.
Last season the clubs played twice Suns winning both contests. The Suns hold the all-time record with 69 wins in 133 matches versus the Suns.
New York Knicks
As they say timing is everything and unfortunately for the Knicks, they drew the short straw having to face the 76ers in consecutive games with the team still reveling in the James Harden addition.
Although the Knicks kept the matches closer than the final scores that’s not what anyone will remember and ultimately it does nothing to help them move up the ladder.
The worst part of the losses is it overshadows how well RJ Barrett played. In the home and home series against the 76ers, at MSG he registered 24 points, five rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
In the Philly-hosted game, he upped the productivity offering 30 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
Coach Tom Thibodeau has switched up his substitutions and as a result, Cam Reddish and Jericho Sims are garnering more playing time.
Sims was solid in the MSG match but struggled in Philly. Hey, he’s a rookie trying to stop the deadliest center in the NBA – but there is much to like about the youngster. He won’t ever be a primary scorer but his energy, motor, rebounding, and defensive ability are all pluses.
Quentin Grimes (knee) was downgraded to out Friday. Derrick Rose (ankle) is out indefinitely while Kemba Walker was shut down for the season.
Phoenix Suns
With Chris Paul already sidelined the Suns got hit by another bomb as Devin Booker had to enter COVID protocols. Missing both their primary scorers and playmakers many thought that would result in the Suns having difficulty collecting wins.
Instead, they pounded the Blazers and fittingly became the first team in the association to register 50 wins highlighting the depth of the roster.
Moreover, it demonstrated how every player on the Suns is committed to head coach Monty Williams’ schemes and accepts their roles even as they fluctuate.
To that end, while Paul and Booker are out many of the younger players will assume larger roles. They accomplished that goal easily in the win versus Portland with six Suns scoring in double-figures led by Cam Johnson with 20 points.
Deandre Ayton served up 18 points and eight rebounds, Mikal Bridges and Jae Crowder each scored 15, Torry Craig chipped in 12 and Landry Shamet added 11.
Booker is in quarantine, while Paul (thumb), Dario Saric (knee), and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are out indefinitely.

Free New York Knicks vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
Without CP3 and Booker, the starting backcourt features Cameron Payne and Landry Shamet who the fans have dubbed the “Shampayne” backcourt.
Phoenix isn’t stressing even without their superstars because the Warriors and Grizzlies haven’t taken advantage and instead of gaining ground their losses have given the Suns a 7.5 edge so even if they were to go on a losing streak it’s unlikely they’ll be caught now.
As for the Knicks, they trail the Hawks for the final play-in seed by five games and a narrowing window to catch them.
My gut says this is one the Knicks can win especially with Barrett playing so well and Julius Randle looking closer to the MIP he won last season.
