Friday, November 4th, the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers play the first of four scheduled meetings this season. Philly will host again on February 10th while the Knicks will host on Christmas Day and February 5th.
Both teams last played Wednesday with Philly losing 111-121 to the Wizards while the Knicks lost 99-112 to the Hawks.
In history, the 76ers own the advantage winning 261 of the clubs’ 464 meetings versus the Knicks. Last season the teams played four times and split the series each winning twice.
New York Knicks
After getting out to a 3-1 start to the season the Knicks have leveled off as they begin to face some of the more elite teams.
Through seven games the Knicks’ defense has outperformed their offense which isn’t a surprise given Tom Thibodeau’s emphasis is always on that side of the hardwood.
Although they allow teams to score 115.1 points per game which ranks 21st, they are forcing bad shots. That’s reflected in the opponent’s efficiency of 42.6 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from the perimeter ranking second and 10th respectively.
Offensively, New York scores an identical 115.1 points per game ranking 12th, they shoot 46% from the field and 32.9% from the perimeter which ranks 19th and 24th.
Their offense abandoned them in the last match versus the Hawks as they scored only 10 points in the third quarter and coughed up a game they led by 23 points at one point.
The Knicks have no reported injuries.
Philadelphia 76ers
The big news out of Philly is James Harden suffered a foot injury that will keep him out of the lineup at least until early December. This just as the Sixers had gotten past their tough opening scheduled and had seemingly found their rhythm.
They got back on track with the second match in Toronto which sparked three wins in their next four contests and that resulted in big ranking shifts on both sides of the court.
In particular, their shooting efficiencies improved to 48.8% from the field and 41.2% from the perimeter both ranking first overall (Suns are tied with them on FG%).
However, they remained 24th for scoring with 110.4 points per game although they are likely to rise higher once they play more matches to offset their early scoring struggles.
Preseason, Joel Embiid spoke of the team being first defensively but again, the Sixers got out to a tough start and that side of the court hasn’t been resolved yet as they’ve allowed over 110 points in five of the nine contests (121 in this last outing).
The average they allow opponents to score is 109.6 points per game (8th). Opponents aren’t faring well from the perimeter shooting 33.3% (tied 7th) but perform better overall from the field shooting 47.6% (23rd).
Embiid missed the last two games versus the Wizards dealing with an illness. Matisse Thybulle left the last game after tweaking his ankle and both are questionable for Friday while De’Anthony Melton (back) is probable. Harden (foot/tendon) is out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- New York is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The 76ers are 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of New York’s last 6 games.
- Philadelphia is 10-1 SU in their last 11 games when playing at home against New York.
Free New York Knicks vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Call me crazy, but I believe Harden being out for a month will benefit the 76ers. They need to increase their pace and take the shackles off Tyrese Maxey who again in my opinion is the better primary complement to Embiid.
Albeit they’ll need to figure out who is the primary ball handler with Melton likely assuming that role in Harden’s absence.
Now they can test that theory and if the 76ers shine during this month it’ll erase the iso-ball, half-court offense Harden prefers.
