The 2022-23 NBA season tips off for the New York Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, October 19th. Both clubs are hopeful to improve upon last season’s campaign.
The Knicks arrive at opening night following a strong 3-1 preseason campaign featuring wins versus the Pistons, Wizards, and a split versus the Pacers.
Memphis delivered a 3-2 preseason record splitting a two-game series against the Magic, lost to the Heat, and victories against the Bucks and Pistons.
Last season, the teams played twice with Memphis winning both contests. The Grizzlies hold the all-time record with 26 wins in 50 matches versus the Knicks.
New York Knicks
For years the Knicks sought to fill their starting point guard role but repeatedly the players they signed failed to live up to expectations.
Derrick Rose was the best of the bunch but with his past knee injuries and age, he’s better suited coming off the bench as the sixth man.
Finally this summer they got their man when Jalen Brunson elected to join the Mecca in free agency not even granting the Mavericks a cup of coffee meeting to discuss his decision or make a counteroffer.
While he’s not considered in the top five at his position he brings intangibles to the Knicks. Much like a younger Kyle Lowry, Brunson is gritty, intelligent, and possesses leadership skills.
Shortly after the signing, the Knicks engaged Danny Ainge regarding also acquiring Donovan Mitchell but Utah’s ask was beyond reason and in truth, it might’ve been best for the Knicks it was.
Brunson and Mitchell would be two smaller guards and while Darius Garland is also on the shorter side (6’1) his skill set is better aligned with Michell (or so it would seem).
Even with their coveted PG in hand, the Knicks aren’t going to automatically be contenders despite the shock RJ Barrett predicts fans will experience via this iteration of the Knicks.
They are still a middling club needing more assets and Coach Thibs to take the shackles off the younger assets so they can grow via real in-game minutes and from their mistakes.
At best New York will experience a miracle season, mesh perfectly and nab the sixth seed. At worst, they’ll miss out on the playoffs altogether including the play-in and subsequently the Wembanyama sweepstakes too. Realistically, they’ll fall into the play-in range.
Memphis Grizzlies
Unlike the Knicks, the front office in Memphis has a clear view of their franchise timeline and isn’t given to knee-jerk decisions. In spite of the Grizzlies overachieving earlier than anticipated, they didn’t overreact.
Rather, they recognize their main core of Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. at 23 are stars but still a few years away from entering their prime. Subsequently, they can afford to continue developing their youthful assets around that duo.
In a year or two, they can revisit the option of making a trade to land the third star to pair with Morant and JJJ or develop someone organically under Taylor Jenkins and his adept staff.
Management is also keenly aware the West will be much improved this year as copious stars return from injury absences (Clippers, Pelicans, Blazers) while other clubs (Wolves/Kings) made moves to become playoff contenders.
Subsequently, even if Memphis plays to the same standard or better yet improves it won’t necessarily equate to finishing second in the West.
That said, this squad has an old-school identity generated from Morant and no-excuses coach so if they do defy the odds we shouldn’t be surprised.
NBA Betting Trends:

- The Grizzlies are 21-6 ATS in their last 27 home games.
- The Under is 4-0 in the Knicks’ last 4 games overall.
- Over is 9-1 in the Grizzlies’ last 10 games playing on 3 or more days rest.
Free New York Knicks vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
Jackson Jr. is progressing but will miss at least a month which impacts the Grizzlies’ defense. In the interim Morant and Co. will try to do what JJJ did last season when Ja was out but Memphis just kept winning.
To that end, the youngsters will jump on the Knicks early and get the victory but the Knicks will keep the score closer than the spread.
