Saturday, February 5th finds the New York Knicks facing the Los Angeles Lakers for the second and final time this season. The Knicks won the initial match 106-100 in New York on November 23rd.
The Lakers played their mutual Crypto.com tenants the Clippers in a 110-111 loss on Thursday while the Knicks played Wednesday losing 108-120 versus the Grizzlies.
All-time the Lakers hold the advantage winning 170 of 294 matches. Last season the teams played twice with both teams taking the matches on their home courts.
New York Knicks
The middle of the East is a jumble of teams all vying to either secure a play-in seed or move up to the sixth rung in order to avoid the play-in tournament.
There are four teams in the group vying for the sixth seed with 1.5 games separating the Nets in sixth and the Hornets in ninth (the Raptors and Celtics are a half and one game out of the sixth seed).
The trio who follows this group includes the Hawks, Wizards, and Knicks who rank 10th through 12th and are separated by a single game but trail the quartet vying for the sixth seed by 2.5 to 3.5 games.
It feels very unlikely this trio will be able to do any better than a play-in seed based on the Hawks winning seven games in a row but not being able to climb higher than 10th.
Certainly, the trade deadline could impact the situation but it feels very much like the four tiers in the East are established as outlined above plus the tanking trio at the bottom.
Derrick Rose (ankle) is the only Knicks player sidelined and while he’s listed as out indefinitely he’s nearing a return from his ankle surgery.
Los Angeles Lakers
Anthony Davis has been spectacular since returning especially in his last four games where he’s averaged 29.5 points, 12.3 rebounds (3.8 offensive boards), 2.3 assists, 1.5 steals, and 2.5 blocks.
And for his efforts, the Lakers have a single win against the similarly reeling Blazers!
I caught some media today where the talking heads waxed poetic about how the Lakers could be a major factor “if” Anthony Davis plays like this when LeBron James is back healthy.
The question I have is how likely is it Davis will keep up this type of production and more importantly remain healthy?
The answer to those questions isn’t required to know this Lakers team will be vying for a play-in seed and enter the trade deadline with at best — hopes and prayers.
Anthony Davis (wrist) is probable while Carmelo Anthony (hamstring) was downgraded to out for Saturday versus the Knicks. LeBron James (knee), Sekou Doumbouya (quarantine), and Kendrick Nunn (knee) are all out indefinitely.

Neither of these clubs has lived up to their preseason expectations but the Knicks have a more defined system in place probably due to Tom Thibodeau. They’ve been quite a few games and it does feel like Derrick Rose’s return could help them get back on track.
That said, neither team looks championship bound but I’m just assessing one game and am picking the Lakers given their 16-12 home record versus the Knicks 11-13 road record.
