Sunday, October 30th the New York Knicks face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first of four meetings this season. Cleveland will host again on March 31st while the Knicks will host on December 4th and January 24th.
Both clubs played on Friday with the Knicks losing 108-119 to the Bucks while the Cavs put on a show pushing the Celtics to overtime where the collected their fourth win (132-123) of the season.
All-time the Knicks have the advantage of winning 116 of the 219 matches versus the Cavaliers. Last season, the teams played three times with the Cavaliers sweeping those three contests.
New York Knicks
The association would love for the Knicks to be relevant and back in the playoffs. They appeal as a big market team and have a loyal basketball loving fan base.
Not to pour cold water on their decent start but a quick gander at their schedule offers evidence of where this team is positioned.
Their three wins came against the Pistons, Magic and Hornets in overtime while their two losses were to the Grizzlies (albeit in overtime) and the Bucks.
Essentially, the Knicks are in the middle tier with they’re ceiling likely the sixth seed and that would take everything going perfect including staying healthy and other teams messing up.
More likely this roster as assembled will vie for one of the play-in seeds. And, that’s not a bad thing because they are in the process of rebuilding their roster.
I’d still like to see Thibs give his young guys more minutes but at the end of the day his job security relies on winning so by that token it’s understandable why he plays the vets and the proven assets more.
Quentin Grimes (foot) was downgraded to out on Sunday vs Cleveland.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Perhaps the most shocking part of the Cavaliers offense to start the season is their perimeter shooting. They rank first in the association shooting 41.7 percent from deep.
It’s a tad bit deceiving because they only attempt 31.2 deep balls ranking 24th which equates to 13.0 makes and ranks 11th. What this speaks to is the Cavs know who they are and play to that identity.
They aren’t jacking up triples just for the sake of it, instead they move the ball to get the best shot and get up the deep balls when a player has a wide-open shot (or their defender is far enough away from them).
Dylan Windler (ankle) and Darius Garland (eye) were both ruled out for Sunday. Ricky Rubio (knee) is out until early January.

To this point in the season it’s the Cavaliers who’ve impressed and have the backup to boast — they rank seventh offensively and third defensively. If there is an area they could tap to improve upon it’s the offensive glass where they rank 14th in offensive rebound percentage.
In comparison, the Knicks rank 12th offensively and ninth defensively but as noted their schedule has been relatively easy. On the glass the Knicks are performing well on the offensive boards ranking sixth in rebound percentage but are an abysmal 28th on the defensive glass.
That battle will decide the margin of victory for the Cavs but I’m picking them to cover.
