Monday, January 24th the New York Knicks face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time this season. Cleveland won the initial match 126-109 in the initial meeting on November 7th.
Cleveland played on Saturday defeating the OKC Thunder 94-87 while the Knicks are playing a back-to-back set having hosted the Clippers on Sunday in a 110-102 victory prior to traveling to Cleveland
All-time the Knicks have the advantage of winning 116 of the 217 matches versus the Cavaliers. Last season, the teams played three times the Knicks taking two of the three contests.
New York Knicks
Since the trade to obtain Cam Reddish the young wing was sidelined healing from an ankle injury. He made his debut on Sunday playing five minutes registering two points and two rebounds versus the Clippers.
It was no secret Reddish wanted a trade because he was desirous of a bigger role but that’s not a given in his new situation either. First and most importantly, Tom Thibodeau is a defensive-minded coach which is the weakness in Reddish’s game — or at least he didn’t excel under Nate McMillan’s system in Atlanta.
Coach Thibs made it clear there is a pecking order in his media session stating “We have a rotation so he has to be patient and work his way through that.” The recent ascent of Immanuel Quickley and Thibodeau’s penchant for playing vets (Alec Burks, Evan Fournier) is going to make his task all the more difficult.
And without consistent playing time, it could be a while before he finds a role on this team especially if the minutes he does play don’t showcase an ability to play defense to the liking of his coach.
That said, there’s no doubt RJ Barrett will be keen to get some running time with his Duke teammate and if Fournier or Burks continues with their uneven play it could accelerate his opportunity.
Kemba Walker (knee) and Ryan Arcidiacono (ankle) are questionable for Monday. Derrick Rose is healing from ankle surgery and out indefinitely.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The winning continues for the Cavaliers but they’ll be dealing with yet another injury as Lauri Markkanen suffered a brutal ankle sprain in the match versus the Thunder. He needed to be helped off the court and it sure looked like this will be a high-grade sprain meaning Markkanen will likely miss several weeks of action.
The big three all delivered double-doubles with Darius Garland leading the way registering 23 points and 11 assists. Evan Mobley offered 15 points and a season-best 17 rebounds while Jarrett Allen produced 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Cedi Osman chipped in 10 points as the only other Cav to reach double-digit scoring.
Rajon Rondo (hamstring) is questionable, Markkanen was initially listed as questionable but subsequently downgraded to being out while Rubio (torn ACL) and Collin Sexton (knee) are both lost for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Knicks are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Cavaliers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games at home.
- The total has gone UNDER in 10 of New York’s last 15 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Cleveland’s last 9 games.
Free New York Knicks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction
The Cavs have the rest and size advantage both of which should pay dividends in this contest. Although the Cleveland towers represent a real dilemma for the Knicks it’s New York who has the better rebounding totals both offensively (11.0 versus 10.2) and total rebounds (45.6 versus 45.3).
Two other areas that will influence the outcome are second-chance points where the Knicks excel ranking fifth (14.4 points) while the Cavaliers feast in the paint scoring 47.9 points per match which ranks ninth.
Both clubs will focus on defense so I’m leaning to the Knicks keeping the score closer than 7.5 points but the Cavs collecting the win.
