Wednesday, March 23rd the New York Knicks play the Charlotte Hornets for the third of four scheduled meetings this season. Charlotte is up 2-0 having won on November 12th (104-96) and January 17th (97-87). The Knicks will host the final meeting on March 30th.
The Knicks are playing a back-to-back set having faced the Hawks in a 111-117 loss on Tuesday while the Hornets played Monday defeating the Pelicans 106-103.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Knicks winning two of the three contests. The Knicks hold the all-time record having bested the Hornets in 61 of their 116 matches.
New York Knicks
Although not mathematically knocked out the Knicks are closing in on being ruled out of the playoffs. They’ve been playing better overall which could be tied to the lack of stress with that option out of the way.
Teams with nothing to lose play with more freedom and enter every game with a different mindset knowing that a loss won’t impact them as negatively as a team jockeying for playoff seeding.
In the loss to the Hawks, without Julius Randle in the lineup, coach Thibs got a good view of what his squad would look like with the emphasis on RJ Barrett. That’s significant if the Knicks elect to move on from Randle this offseason.
The Canadian embraced the opportunity posting a double-double of 30 points and 13 rebounds plus three assists, and two steals. Immanuel Quickly scored 17 off the bench while Alec Burkes (21), Evan Fournier (11), and Obi Toppin (10) were the other double-digit contributors.
Julius Randle (quad) was out on Tuesday and is questionable for Wednesday as is Nerlens Noel (foot).
Derrick Rose (ankle) is out indefinitely. Cam Reddish (shoulder) is done for the season while Kemba Walker and the Knicks mutually agreed to shut him down for the season with the likelihood he’ll be traded or bought out in the offseason.
Charlotte Hornets
Suddenly the Hornets are hot again and talking like a team that expects to be in the mix come playoff time.
However, the comments Miles Bridges made after their win Tuesday was something you would expect to hear from an elite team on a minor downswing, not a team who are only potentially in the playoffs because the league changed their postseason dynamics to include a play-in tournament.
“We had a bad February and we were dropping out of the playoffs, so we just wanted to show the NBA that we’re here. We are going to continue to play like this and put the NBA on notice.” – Bridges
With all due respect to the Hornets’ offensive brilliance, I’m not buying into the bravado. Until his squad plays any semblance of defense for 48 minutes or proves they have a commitment on that end it’s hard to take them seriously.
Even the current five-game winning streak is comprised of four current lottery teams (Pelicans x2, Thunder, Hawks) and one elite team on the road playing the second game of a back-to-back set (Mavericks).
Since he’s putting everyone on notice I’ll be paying attention to the Hornets’ final 10 games and in particular the games versus the Jazz, Nets, Nuggets, 76ers, Heat, and Bulls.
Gordon Hayward (ankle) is out indefinitely.
