RJ Barrett is already a 20 point-per-game scorer at the NBA level, though, or, he is so far, at least.
He’s shooting exactly 50% from the field, including nearly 47% from three-point range. Now, let me get to some of the “but’s.”
He’s playing a team-high 37 minutes per game, which, I would have to imagine, at age 19, is an unprecedented pace. That three-point percentage is also better than his rate from the free-throw line, which is an abysmal 44 percent on more than six attempts per game (he shot 66.5% at Duke).
That scoring total is hard to ignore, as are his 7.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. It’s still a little scary how much New York relies on the rookie. He only scored nine against Orlando on Wednesday and the Knicks finished with a season-low 83 points.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics are equipped to deal with a player like Barrett. The responsibility of shutting him down will fall Jaylen Brown, the Celtics’ newly-minted $30 million-a-year star.

Thing is, he hasn’t made an All-Star team yet. He hasn’t come particularly close, either. And some NBA fans believe the Celtics overpaid him.
Perhaps. There are certainly better $30 million-a-year players out there but, sometimes, it’s not as much about that as it is about who a team can sign.
The Celtics drafted Brown and value his place in the organization. Bigger mistakes have been made than paying such a player. The Celtics believe Brown will continue to improve; they know he will at least defend every night.
Brown missed Boston’s latest victory, an impressive one against the Bucks on Wednesday, with an illness but he should be back in time for this one. So I’m calling for another difficult night for Barrett, who, at the least, will have to work hard for his buckets
