Saturday, January 15th, finds the New York Knicks facing the Atlanta Hawks for the third time this season. The Knicks won both prior meetings on November 27th (99-90) and on December 25th (101-87). The teams will play once more in New York on March 22nd.
The Hawks are on playing the second game of a back-to-back set having lost 118-124 to the Heat on Friday while the Knicks last played Wednesday versus the Mavericks in a 108-85 winning effort.
New York Knicks
The Knicks have experienced an uptick in success winning four of five games and made news this week via a trade to acquire Cam Reddish from the Hawks. In addition, they’ll add Solomon Hill (although he’s out for the season with a hamstring injury) as well as Brooklyn’s 2025 second-round draft pick.
Going back to the Hawks is Kevin Knox, and the Hornets 2022 first-round draft pick.
The main goal of the Knicks was to add another offensive talent and Reddish brings that to the table. Appearing in 34 games this season Reddish is averaging 11.9 points 2.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.0 steals per game. Of his 10.1 field goal attempts 4.5 were from the perimeter where he is shooting 37.9 percent.
With Kemba Walker currently sidelined the Knicks are utilizing a starting rotation featuring three shooting guards — RJ Barrett, Evan Fournier, and Alec Burks.
Reddish will be a welcome addition to the bench. Case in point, in the recent victory versus the Mavericks all five Knicks starters scored in double-figures but the bench only scored 17 points despite four players logging between 11 and 21 minutes.
Ryan Arcidiacono (ankle) is questionable while Cam Reddish (ankle) and Kemba Walker (knee) are out. Derrick Rose (knee) is rehabbing, Solomon Hill is out for the season.
Atlanta Hawks
Last season in the playoffs Trae Young embraced the role of villain as his Hawks dispensed of the Knicks 4-1 in the first round complete with a bow to the Mecca faithful at MSG.
This season neither team has shown the same verve they displayed in 2020-21 with both teams currently well down the seedings (Knicks are 10th and Hawks are 12th).
While the Knicks have recently recognized improved play the Hawks are reeling having lost 12 of their last 16 matches including four in a row.
In the deal with the Knicks, New York sent back Kevin Knox and the Hornets 2022 first-round draft pick. This move was more about clearing salary and getting something back for Reddish prior to this summer when he’ll be eligible for his rookie contract extension. Clearly, Travis Schlenk didn’t envision Reddish being part of the future.
It also tips the hat that if the rumors of the Hawks wanting to trade for Ben Simmons, Reddish wasn’t someone that Daryl Morey was interested in. While that’s supposition – I have no qualified information, rather, I’m simply linking the logic if the Hawks are even truly interested in getting Simmons.
Kevin Huerter (foot) is questionable while Clint Capela (ankle), Jalen Johnson (ankle) are downgraded to out for Saturday.

Free New York Knicks vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
These meetings are always highly contested albeit there isn’t quite the same energy in Atlanta to rival the atmosphere at MSG. Atlanta will be playing with desperation, the question is whether they’ll bring enough energy (having played Friday) to beat New York.
