Game 1 went almost exactly how we predicted. The New Orleans Pelicans entered the Moda Center as 5.5-point dogs, but that always seemed high. We picked the Pellies to not only win ATS, but win straight up on the road by three—and in reality, New Orleans won by two.
The Trail Blazers should be focused and out for revenge in Game 2.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans got a number of big-time performances outside of their MVP-caliber franchise player, Anthony Davis. Jrue Holiday struggled from the three-point line (1-of-5) and didn’t rack op many assists (two) but he scored well going for 21 and collected seven rebounds along the way.
The big story at point guard, though, was Playoff Rondo. Rajon Rondo came to play, picking up 17 assists.
Nikola Mirotic went for a double-double, dropping 16 points (4-of-10 from the three-point line) to go along with his 11 rebounds.
And then, of course, there was Davis.
The Pelicans’ big man went for an impressive 35 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks. He was not going to be denied in this one, and he earned his first-ever postseason victory as a result.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Blazers made a a nice comeback late against the Pelicans in Game 1, but poor execution on the team’s final possessions made it all for not.
The truth, though, is that this team simply missed a lot of good shots, which is encouraging if you’re a Blazers fan.
Although Portland struggled to contain New Orleans’ key players, the defense overall did a nice job, keeping the Pelicans to 97 points. Game 2 will be about getting their offense to click while playing the same level of defense.
On the night in Game 1, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum combined for 13-of-41 from the field (31.7 percent), which was bad enough to play a bigger role in the outcome than the two guards combining for 8-of-19 from the three-point line (42.1 percent).
NBA Betting Trends:
- NO are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 road games.
- Favorite is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
- Under is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings in Portland.
Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
Although the line hasn’t been set yet for this contest, we’re picking the Blazers in a comfortable win with confidence. Between figuring out their shots (very easy for this team) and figuring out how to contain the role players behind Davis (more difficult, but still promising since nobody will likely play as well in Game 2 as they did in Game 1), Portland has a lot to look forward to in Game 2.
