The New Orleans Pelicans and Phoenix Suns tip off on Friday, October 28th for the first time since the teams played in the 2022 NBA playoffs.
This is the first of four meetings between the clubs with Phoenix hosting again on December 17th and the two meetings in New Orleans on December 9th and 11th.
Both teams played on Tuesday with the shorthanded Pelicans defeating the Mavericks (113-111) and the Suns beating the Warriors (134-105) in a chippy tech-filled match.
The Suns hold the advantage all-time winning 36 of the 68 matches versus the Pelicans. They played four times last season with the Suns winning three of the four contests. They met again in the first round with the Suns prevailing 4-2.
New Orleans Pelicans
Although the Pelicans shocked the Mavericks without Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson, or Herb Jones in the lineup they were hoping to have some of those players back particularly for this match.
The New Orleans players spent the summer using the first-round playoff loss to the Suns as motivation to improve and Williamson who missed all of last season no doubt wants to gauge how much of a difference he’ll make added to that rotation.
He’s been upgraded to questionable but the issue for Willie Green is the list of walking wounded has grown instead of shrinking. Eight players are on the list including Zion…
Jones (knee), CJ McCollum (finger), Jose Alvarado (back), and Dyson Daniels (ankle) are all questionable for Friday while Brandon Ingram (concussion protocol) is listed as out until November. Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) and E.J. Liddell (knee) are out indefinitely.
Phoenix Suns
While the Suns jumped out to an early lead over the Warriors on Tuesday the game was within three points before the wheels fell off.
It’s no secret I’m not as impressed by Phoenix as some of my peers but this game got out of hand because the officials. Klay Thompson was ejected for the first time in his career and seven techs were called in the third.
Phoenix started more aggressively but it’s also true they were afforded a completely different whistle. Touch fouls were called on the Dubs while there are numerous examples of the Suns aggressively defending (and fouling based on what the refs called on the other side).
Steph Curry was the ONLY Warriors starter to shoot free throws (5) while every Suns starter plus two reserves got to the line.
Phoenix took DOUBLE the free throws (34-17). Again, go back and watch the game up to the point Thompson is ejected and witness the Warriors drive the paint gets fouled, and not receive the call, and then the very next play a touch foul sends a Suns player to the charity stripe.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of New Orleans’ last 5 games.
- Phoenix is 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games.
- New Orleans is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games against Phoenix.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Phoenix’s last 9 games.
Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Phoenix Suns NBA Prediction:
If the Pelicans had Ingram, McCollum, and Zion all back on the court I’d be leaning heavily toward them not only covering the spread but winning UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES.
However, my personal belief is when a team is for sale they’ll get a special whistle until the sale occurs. To wit, the Rockets delivered a 65-17 record in 2017-18 while the Hawks were 60-22 in 2015 (they won 38 games the year prior and 48 the year after the sale).
Let’s just say, I’ll be leaning heavily toward picking the Suns to cover most games until they’re sold.
