On Tuesday, March 8th, the New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies play the third of four scheduled meetings this season.
The clubs have split the two prior matches with the Pels winning 112-101 on November 13th while Memphis won 121-109 on February 15th. Memphis will also host the final game on April 9th.
Both teams played Sunday with the Pelicans losing 130-138 in overtime to the Nuggets while the Grizzlies lost 112-103 to the Rockets.
Last season the clubs played three times with the Pelicans winning two of the three contests. The Pelicans hold the all-time record with 40 wins in 72 matches versus the Grizzlies.
New Orleans Pelicans
It took an otherworldly performance by the reigning MVP to propel the Nuggets back in the match Sunday and steal back the victory from the Pelicans ending their four-game winning streak.
This new iteration of the Pels with CJ McCollum has gelled quickly with the combo of CJ and Brandon Ingram feasting. Willie Green has the supporting players offering a better level of defense and building momentum at the perfect time.
With the Blazers essentially raising the white flag focused on visions of draft lottery bingo balls the only way they lose a play-in berth, is if the Spurs or Kings can catch them and the Pels hold a three and four-point edge over them respectively.
As for the overtime game, the Pels erased a 21 point deficit with Ingram putting up 38 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and a block. McCollum offered 24 points, nine assists five rebounds, and a steal.
Jonas Valanciunas delivered a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds while Devonte Graham scored 12 points off the bench. New
Zion Williamson (foot) and Larry Nance Jr. (knee) are out indefinitely while Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is out for the season.
Memphis Grizzlies
With the Warriors reeling the Grizzlies overtook them after their victory versus Orlando but they let a golden opportunity (no pun intended) slip away when they lost to the Rockets.
That pushed the Warriors back into second and although it might only be a matter of time before Memphis overtakes them they can’t continue to lose games they should win.
The Grizz have an easier closing schedule and have secured at least a tie against the Warriors with a 2-1 series lead plus hold a four-game lead over the Mavericks almost ensuring them the Divisional win also giving them the tiebreaker edge.
Ja Morant had a heck of a week with spectacular performances and nightly highlights. Taylor Jenkins will need to keep his young crew focused to ensure they don’t slump at the wrong time.
Dillon Brooks’ return would offer help on both ends of the court and given his demeanor add an element of grit and energy. He’s missed 25 games and is well past the original three to five-week projected absence.
Brooks was on the court for pregame warmups taking shots so presumably, he’s close to a return, but he’s listed as out on the injury report.
