Sunday, October 30th, 2022 the New Orleans Pelicans and the LA Clippers meet for the first time since the play-in tournament. That one game ended the Clippers season and elevated the Pels into the first round of the playoffs.
The teams will play three times with another game in LA on March 25th and the final meeting in New Orleans on April 1st.
The Pelicans won the 2021-22 regular-season series 3-1 with victories occurring on November 19th (94-81), November 29th (123-104), and January 13th (113-89) while the Clippers won the last match on April 3rd (119-100).
The Pelicans own the all-time record with 37 wins of the 68 contests between the teams.
New Orleans Pelicans
Willie Green had his team fired up to start the season and build upon the momentum of their playoff performance in 2022 where they gave the Suns all they could handle.
In the initial matches this squad looked like a bonafide challenger to not only gain a playoff seed but potentially vie for home court seeding. Then injuries knocked out the top two offensive players resulting in the Pels alternating two losses and a win in the last three games.
New Orleans is also missing the top defender (Jones) which is impacting the clubs ability to stay close in matches. The news for Sunday isn’t great with each of the trio either listed as out, questionable or doubtful.
Zion Williamson (hip), and Herbert Jones (knee) are both questionable for Sunday. Brandon Ingram (concussion protocol) is out indefinitely.
Dyson Daniels (ankle) was downgraded to out Sunday and Kira Lewis Jr. (knee) is out indefinitely.
LA Clippers
So much for the Clippers looking like the early favorites to win the title in 2023. With news Kawhi Leonard had left OKC to head back to LA because he was experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired knee has everyone scrambling.
If it had been just for precaution as head coach Ty Lue state than this probably just gets put on the back burner. But the fact Leonard is ruled out again on Sunday coupled with the team losing both games against the tanking Thunder has fans and analysts up in arms.
The main question is how serious the knee soreness is. Also concerning is the fact the Clippers who boast the deepest rotation in the NBA don’t seem in sync and look more like a middling team than a contender.
The second loss to the Thunder raised red flags since Paul George was in the lineup and with their deep roster it should’ve been an easy win especially with Josh Giddey and Jalen Williams both out.
Leonard (knee) was downgraded to out on Sunday, Marcus Morris (personal) is questionable while Robert Covington is doubtful due to illness.

LA boasts the sixth ranked defense (Pels are 21st) while the Pelicans rank third offensively (LA is 29th).
Clearly having Ingram and Williamson impacts their production but the Pels rank second for paint scoring, fourth in second chance scoring, sixth in points scored off turnovers and 14th on the fast break.
Conversely, on the defensive end the Clippers rank 14th, 24th, 29th and ninth with two of those categories defenitely impacted by LA’s lack of size and struggles on the glass.
Injuries will have the biggest impact on this contest and theorthetically will hurt the Pelicans more given the players on the shelf. It’s an early start time so we’ll see if Ingram, Williamson and Jones are last minute additions.
For that reason I’ll lean LA for the win (barring positive news about the injuries)..
