Sunday, March 6th finds the New Orleans Pelicans playing the Denver Nuggets for the fourth and final time this season.
The Nuggets lead the regular-season series 2-1 having won the December 8th (120-114 in overtime) and January 28th (116-105) matches while New Orleans won 113-105 on February 4th.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Pelicans pounding the Jazz 124-90 while the Joker-less Nuggets defeated the Rockets 116-101.
The Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Pelicans in 38 of their 67 meetings. Last season the squads played three times with Denver winning two of the three contests.
New Orleans Pelicans
The win streak is up to four games in a row and includes impressive victories versus the Suns and Jazz. As I’ve stated before it sure seems likely the Timberwolves and Pelicans will be the clubs advancing to the postseason once the play-in is complete.
Both of these teams have improved and are building momentum whereas the Blazers have raised the white flag and the Lakers are a mess.
CJ McCollum has brought a calmness to the Pels mixed with a confident swagger and they’ve bought into it playing well on both sides of the court. Even if they progress out of the play-in they won’t likely get out of the first round but it will offer experience to the youngsters.
More importantly, it might send a strong message to Zion Williamson to figure out his conditioning this offseason so the Pels could take another step next season.
If he wavers or looks uninvested then David Griffin and ownership will have to decide if it would be better to move Zion now and get back value or ride the storm with him only to see him exit for New York as soon as he can.
And that’s the big dilemma for the Pels, they can’t sign (or shouldn’t) Zion to the max without health caveats in his contract and if they trade him they aren’t likely to get a return that would match his ceiling (if he ever plays).
If I were Griff I’d be kicking the tires of the team who lands the top draft pick because the top three picks this year stand out (and they’re big men).
Williamson (foot) and Larry Nance Jr. (knee) are out indefinitely while Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is out for the season.
Denver Nuggets
When Michael Malone was released from Sacramento no one was more upset than DeMarcus Cousins. Malone had got the Kings out to a great start but then injury hit and just before Cousins was set to return they fired Malone.
At the time, it was clear 1) they wanted Malone gone and 2) Cousins had zero say about moves made by the franchise.
All these years later and after copious injuries it feels only fitting that Cousins has ended up back with Malone and not on a 10-day but locked in for the remainder of the season as Jokic’s backup.
With Nikola Jokic out due to illness, Cousins got the start against the Rockets and led Denver to victory with 31 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block.
But the best play of the game came during his exit as he and Malone embraced on the sideline – a picture worth a thousand words.
Jokic (illness) and Austin Rivers (illness) were upgraded to probable while Zeke Nnaji (hamstring) is questionable to play Sunday. Vlatko Cancar (fractured foot), Jamal Murry (ACL), and Michael Porter Jr. (back surgery) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in the last 10 head to head matches
- The Pelicans are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 2-8 in the team’s last 10 head-to-head matchups.
Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Denver Nuggets NBA Prediction
With Jokic back and with the game in Denver it should favor the Nuggets but they can’t afford to sleep on these Pels who are playing much-improved ball. It’s a slight three-point spread so I like the Nuggets to cover and win (but barely)
