Monday, March 21st the New Orleans Pelicans play the Charlotte Hornets for the second and final time this season. The Hornets won the initial meeting 142-120 on March 11th.
The Pelicans are playing a back-to-back set having defeated the Hawks 117-112 on Sunday while the Hornets played Saturday defeating the Mavericks 129-108.
Last season, the squads played twice with each team winning on the opponent’s court. The Pelicans hold the all-time record having bested the Hornets in 23 of their 34 matches.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans have dealt with adversity all season, first with Zion Williamson’s foot injury that hasn’t healed as expected, and then just as they seemed to get on track looking like they might climb up the ladder they suffered more injuries causing their other star Brandon Ingram to be sidelined indefinitely with a hamstring injury.
The bad news kept occurring with CJ McCollum having to miss time because he contracted COVID but fortunately because he was vaccinated only missed two games. So the Pels followed four wins with four losses but again back on track winning three of their last four matches.
In the victory versus Atlanta, the Pels big men made a statement each securing a double-double with Jonas Valanciunas offering 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a bone-jarring screen on Trae Young at game end. Jaxon Hayes is thriving as a starter offering 12 points and 12 rebounds (six on the offensive glass).
McCollum has fit in perfectly and is providing the leadership this team needed and did so once again Sunday with 25 points, eight assists, and four rebounds. The other double-digit contributors were Willy Hernangomez (17), Jose Alvarado (15), and Herb Jones (11).
Devonte Graham (hip) is questionable for Monday. Larry Nance Jr. (knee), Brandon Ingram (hamstring), and Zion Williamson (foot) are out indefinitely. Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season.
Charlotte Hornets
With their season on the line and trying to secure a berth in the play-in tournament with the best possible seeding, the Hornets have won four games in a row. The streak started with a victory versus the Pelicans then extended with victories versus the Thunder, Hawks, and Mavericks.
It’s no secret the Hornets don’t truly commit to the defensive end of the floor. Rather they rely on their offensive punch throwing in zone defense and spurts of defense. That’s been working and the biggest surprise was their win versus Dallas who possesses one of the best defenses in the NBA.
Balanced scoring was the key to the win with Miles Bridges leading the way scoring 23 points and grabbing eight rebounds. P.J. Washington scored a season-best 21 points. Terry Rozier offered a productive showing with 18 points, six rebounds, six assists, and a block.
LaMelo Ball offered 17 points, seven assists, four rebounds, and four steals while Kelly Oubre also scored 17 adding six rebounds and Montrezl Harrell scored 13.
Gordon Hayward (ankle) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:

- Charlotte is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 7 of New Orleans’ last 8 games against an Eastern Conference opponent
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Charlotte’s last 7 games.
- The Pelicans are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 road games.
- The Hornets are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as a favorite.
Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction:
This match should be intriguing as the Pels play two-way ball and their frontcourt size will be an issue for Charlotte as they have no one who can deal with Valanciunas. Although the issue for New Orleans is their record in second games of back-to-backs is 1-10 with the lone win versus the Pistons.
Charlotte is riding the win streak and has the rest advantage and probably gets the win but I like the Pels to keep it closer than the six point spread despite their abhorrent record in consecutive games.
