Two teams missing key players for the long-term this season face each other in Brooklyn on Monday night.
The Nets, without Kevin Durant, will be established favorites against the Pelicans, who are missing their first-overall pick Zion Williamson.

After losing their first four games of the season, including one to Golden State that is still the Warriors’ lone win, the Pelicans beat the Nuggets on Thursday night for their first victory.

Brandon Ingram and Jahlil Okafor combined for fifty-one points in the 15-point win. Jrue Holiday chipped in another nineteen.
Back in action on Saturday, New Orleans dropped one in Oklahoma City, 115–104. Ingram played thirteen minutes and scored seven points with four rebounds before leaving with a mysterious head injury and failing to return.
Alvin Gentry didn’t see the contact so he didn’t have much to report on Ingram’s injury after the game. It’s unclear whether he’s in concussion protocol.
Derrick Favors didn’t play due to right knee soreness. Guys like Frank Jackson, Kenrich Williams, and Jaxson Hayes picked up minutes with the Pelicans’ injuries.
Brooklyn Nets
The Nets fell to 2–4 with a four-point loss in Detroit on Saturday night.

Kyrie Irving logged the third triple-double of his career, and first with Brooklyn. He scored twenty points, grabbed eleven rebounds, and finished with exactly ten assists. I’m sorry for even making a big deal about a triple-double anyway; the numbers are all arbitrary.
The Pistons got seventy-one points from the trio of Andre Drummond, Luke Kennard, and Bruce Brown Jr.
Brooklyn hasn’t gotten on any sort of roll yet but this team is good enough to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. If it gets Kevin Durant back in time, it has a chance to go all the way to the Finals.

The Nets have a Durant return on the horizon, somewhere. They really should be playing harder than anybody else in the early part of this season because they need to stack wins, if Durant will indeed return for the playoffs.
I’m not sure Irving has had this mentality so far and that isn’t likely to change in time for this game. The other guys should be enough to beat the Pelicans, though.
Not only may Ingram not play; if he does, Brooklyn has Taurean Prince to throw at him. Jarrett Allen and DeAndre Jordan should handle Okafor and there just isn’t a whole lot else for the Pelicans at this point.

This should be a totally high-scoring and wide-open game. Most Pelicans’ games are lined up in the 240s these days and this should be at least up in the 230s.
I’ll take the Nets to win by double-digits. Big fantasy days for guys like Allen and Joe Harris for the Nets. If the Pelicans are without Ingram, look to Kenrich Williams for New Orleans.
