Sunday, March 20th, finds the New Orleans Pelicans facing the Atlanta Hawks for the second and final time this season. Atlanta won the initial meeting 102-99 on October 27th.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Pelicans beating the Spurs 124-91 while the shorthanded Hawks beat the Grizzlies 120-105.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Hawks sweeping the regular-season series. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Pelicans in 21 of their 40 matches.
New Orleans Pelicans
The win on Friday had seeding implications as the Spurs are the team directly behind the Pelicans who currently reside in the 10th spot.
New Orleans is 2.5 games up on San Antonio and trails the Lakers by a single game for the 9th spot.
With the Clippers up 5.5 games on the Pels, their focus is just on making sure they land one of those two spots and depending on which matchup they prefer (Clippers or likely the Wolves) whether they finish with the ninth or 10th seed.
Without Brandon Ingram, the Pelicans’ offense has taken a hit but they got balanced scoring Friday with CJ McCollum leading the way scoring 20 while Jonas Valanciunas posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Naji Marshall (18), Jaxson Hayes (16), Herb Jones (13), and Willie Hernangomez (11) were the other double-figure scorers.
Devonte Graham (hip) is questionable for Sunday. Larry Nance Jr. (knee), Brandon Ingram (hamstring), and Zion Williamson (foot) are out indefinitely. Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season.
Atlanta Hawks
With less than a month remaining in the regular season many of the top teams will begin periodically resting players from their cores against lower-tier seeds and not take any chances on minor injuries.
For clubs like the Hawks, they are virtually guaranteed either the 9th or 10th seed but would like to climb higher to ensure they get two guaranteed shots of making the playoffs.
Trae Young has battled a sore back, quad, and ankle in various games but hadn’t missed a match since the All-Star break until Friday when the quad proved too bothersome to play through.
Hawks forward John Collins has a plantar fascia tear in his right foot as well as damage to his right ring finger, sources tell me and @ChrisKirschner. Collins has been playing through pain for past several weeks, but will now be sidelined indefinitely.

John Collins has arguably had the worst luck on the Hawks missing games for shoulder soreness, a foot strain, ankle tweaks, lower back tightness, and most recently a finger spring. However, news broke this weekend he’ll be out at least 10 to 14 days with plantar fasciitis (and possibly the season).
While Young is the quarterback of the team, Collins is equally important as an energy player, secondary scorer, rebounder, and one of the team’s better defenders. Clearly, getting him right in time for the play-in is most important but they sure could’ve used him for the stretch run.
With their top two stars out the defeat of the Grizzlies was even more impressive as everyone stepped up to deliver. Bogdan Bogdanovic led the way with 30 points while Delon Wright stepped up to offer 18 points, three rebounds, six assists, five steals, and a block.
Clint Capela (18), De’Andre Hunter (14) and Danilo Gallinari (11) were the other double-figure scorers.
Kevin Huerter (back) is probable, Young (quad) is questionable for Sunday while John Collins (foot) remains out with no definitive return date.

Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
With both teams missing core talents this match could go either way but Atlanta missing both Young and Collins (and yes they played great Friday) the Pelicans should have the edge with McCollum and co.
