Saturday, November 5th, finds the New Orleans Pelicans facing the Atlanta Hawks for the first of two meetings this season. New Orleans will host the second match on February 7th.
The Pels arrive to complete a back-to-back set having doled out the Warriors’ fifth straight loss on Friday (114-105) while the Hawks last played Wednesday defeating the Knicks 112-99 and will have the major rest advantage over New Orleans.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Hawks sweeping the regular-season series. The Hawks hold the all-time record having bested the Pelicans in 21 of their 40 matches.
New Orleans Pelicans
Brandon Ingram (concussion protocols) and Herb Jones (knee) returned to the lineup on Friday and while they faced a Warriors team who rested their veteran core both made an impact.
Ingram led the way with 26 points, five rebounds, and five assists while Jones wasn’t particularly sharp on the offensive end he was sharp defensively.
Six Pelicans served up double-figure scoring contributions including CJ McCollum who offered 20 points plus eight rebounds, and five assists.
The others were Larry Nance Jr (20 points, eight rebounds), Zion Williamson (16) while Jose Alvarado and Trey Murphy III each chipped in 10 points.
The Pelicans are scoring 118.3 points per game which rank just behind the Warriors (2nd overall). They are shooting 48.5% from the field which ranks third overall and a robust 39% from the perimeter ranking fourth.
Defensively, the Pelicans allow 112.6 points per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the field both ranking 15th and they possess the best perimeter defense holding opponents to 31.3 percent from beyond the arc.
E.J. Liddell (knee) and Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) are out indefinitely.
Atlanta Hawks
It was a tough night in the Mecca for Trae Young who took an inadvertent finger to the eye and had to leave in the second half but returned to help net the victory via his 17 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
In Young’s absence, Dejounte Murray stepped up scoring 36 points which was instrumental in erasing the 23-point lead the Knicks had mounted over the Hawks.
Atlanta allows 114.6 points per game ranking 20th and opponents are shooting 45.8 percent from the field (11th) and 32.8 percent from the perimeter (5th).
Offensively, Atlanta scores 115.5 per game ranking 11th, and score 113.8 points per 100 possessions which ranks sixth. They shoot 47.1% from the field (9th) and 35.9 from the perimeter (15th).
Young (eye) is probable for Saturday. Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) is out indefinitely.

Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
This is the first back-to-back set for the Pelicans this season and it will offer a great litmus test for how much the team has grown. They were 3-11 on the second games of B2B sets last season although they were 2-3 after February.
Atlanta will look to push pace hoping to tire out the already fatigued Pels who also had to travel to Atlanta after their big win versus the Warriors.
Willie Green wisely kept most of the players’ minutes down with just McCollum (34) and Ingram (36) logging more than 30 minutes which should help their cause.
Ultimately, the game could be decided by 3-point shooting and on the glass. Both teams are among the best perimeter defenders but the Pels are decidedly better on the boards and something tells me they’ll also perform better on back-to-back sets this season.
