Sunday, March 3, 2019, finds the Minnesota Timberwolves on the road in a match versus the Washington Wizards. The Wolves last played on Thursday when they lost to the Pacers 122-115. Meanwhile, the Wizards lost to the Celtics 107-96 in their Friday contest.

At issue is the Wolves struggle away from the Target Center where they are 1-6 in their last seven with the lone victory coming against the Knicks.

Andrew Wiggins continues to struggle to find consistent effort and his 17.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists is well shy of the expectations the franchise expected when they signed him to a five-year $148 million contract.

Robert Covington continues to miss games due to a bone bruise and has no definitive return date which is concerning as the Wolves could certainly use his 3 and D assets as they try to obtain a playoff berth.

Luol Deng (sore left Achilles) missed the last game and is questionable versus the Wizards on Sunday. Gorgui Dieng isn’t with the team dealing with a personal matter and his return date is uncertain.

Washington Wizards

Bradley Beal is averaging 25.8 points,  5.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists this season. Beal took over the leadership role when John Wall was lost for the season but despite the Wizards suggesting they intended to compete for the postseason they’ve fallen short of those expectations.

Washington enters the day seeded 11th and four games off the pace of the eighth-seeded Hornets. The thinking was the addition of Michael Beasley and Bobby Portis at the deadline would add enough depth for Washington to remain relevant, but to date that hasn’t been the case.

Beal (29) led the scoring versus Boston with Jeff Green (15), Tomas Satoransky (15) and Jabari Parker (12) all pitching in double-digit scoring efforts.

John Wall (ruptured Achilles tendon) is out for the season while Dwight Howard (lower back surgery) is projected for a mid-March return. Presumably, if Washington is mathematically eliminated at this point they’ll shut Howard down for the season.
