Night two of the 2023-24 season features the Toronto Raptors hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves.
While preseason games aren’t a harbinger of how teams will perform when matches count, the Raptors and Wolves have the benefit of momentum as the only two unbeaten teams in the preseason.
Timberwolves vs. Raptors ATS Stats
Minnesota finished the 2023 season ranking 44-45 overall against the spread. Also, they were 23-22 ATS as the away team.
Notably, the Raptors were 41-40-2 against the spread this season. Also, they are 25-16-1 ATS as the home team.
Season Series
Toronto holds the all-time advantage over Minnesota with 37 wins in 54 games. Last season the teams split their regular season meetings each winning at home.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Tim Connelly made his big moves last offseason with the questionable trade for Rudy Gobert so by comparison this offseason was much tamer with the GM focusing on retaining the core.
Connelly’s moves were smallish to add depth, although the biggest action was inking defensive specialist Jaden McDaniels to a 5-year, $136 million extension.
Ultimately, this feels like a make-or-break season for Carl-Anthony Towns. All signs point to Anthony Edwards taking over as the face of the franchise and the clock is running on Towns in terms of whether he can mesh with Ant or needs to be moved.
Edwards shone in the World Cup games and is ready to take another step and could vie for Most Improved this season.
Wolves Stats
Minnesota played five preseason games finishing with a 5-0 record. Last season the Wolves finished ranking 23rd on offense (113.3), and 10th on defense (113.1) while they registered the 18th-ranked net rating (plus +0.2).
Wolves Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Mike Conley, PG (probable – illness)
- Karl-Anthony Towns, C (probable – ankle)
- Jaden McDaniels, PF (questionable – calf)
Toronto Raptors
Constancy reigns supreme in Toronto despite neverending rumors Pascal Siakam or O.G. Anunoby would be traded. Masai Ujiri remains steadfast in his belief this squad is more than the sum of its parts.
Fred VanVleet signed with Houston and some would tell you it was a welcome goodbye given how stale the offense was and the internal turmoil last season. Dennis Schroder replaces FVV while Ujiri also added Jalen McDaniels and drafted sharpshooter Gradey Dick.
Perhaps the biggest move for the Raps was firing Nick Nurse and replacing him with Darko Rajakovic who is changing up schemes on both sides of the court.
Offensively, Darko wants the ball moving (which it did in the preseason) and on defense, they’ll play a much more traditional scheme with far less switching.
Scottie Barnes could give Ant a run for most improved after a solid summer in the lab, adding nine pounds of muscle, working on his conditioning and all-around skillset. He’ll get an opportunity to shine this season with the ball being put in his hand much more frequently.
Raptors Stats
The Raptors registered a 4-0 record in the preseason. Last season Toronto finished ranking 13th offensively (114.6), and 11th defensively (113.1) with the 12th-best net differential (+1.5).
Raptors Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Scottie Barnes, SF (questionable – foot)

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Playing across the border has been a challenge for the Wolves who’ve only won once in their last 19 attempts. Despite the talented group of Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Jaden McDaniels two of that group may be out due to injury.
And while Toronto may not boast the same recognized level of talent Scottie Barnes and Pascal Siakam looked great in the new system registering the top net differential (by far) even without members of their core playing until the final game.
For that reason, I’m leaning toward the home side to win a close battle.
