I love the NBA but I’d much prefer if it could at least wait until after the World Series to begin. I’m still in a baseball state of mind.
Most of the dramatic news I read about the NBA in the offseason came out of Minnesota, where Jimmy Butler is trying desperately to light a fire under Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins.
But in doing so, he’s coming off as an asshole. He’s frustrated because he feels like he sets an example, an example the other two stars failed to live up to in their first season with Butler.
Now, he’s doing a combination of whining and acting all tough and the youngsters aren’t having it. Apparently, he took the third-string in practice and beat the starters. Thing is, Jimmy, you’re supposed to be the best player on the team. What exactly are you trying to prove? How much better you are than everybody else?
At least the trade talks have gone away. Butler is going to be a Wolf, as will Towns and Wiggins and they’re all healthy but they aren’t getting along.
I expect two things from Minnesota early on in the season: energy and dysfunction. They may just come out playing as hard as any team in the early going because of all the negative attention they’ve received. It would look terrible if they came out listlessly.
But there has to be a certain amount of dysfunctionality because of all the chemistry issues. That’s what makes the first opponent of the season so interesting.
San Antonio Spurs
Because the Spurs aren’t the most talented team in the NBA but if there is one team I would take to beat a dysfunctional unit by picking it apart with team basketball, it would be San Antonio.
The Spurs were still quite good last season without Kawhi Leonard. Now, they add DeMar DeRozan to what is nearly the same unit. Danny Green went with Leonard to Toronto and Kyle Anderson skipped town for the Grizzlies.
Then, of course, Manu Ginobili retired and Tony Parker moved on to play for Charlotte. This will be the first game at AT&T Center where neither Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili or Tony Parker are on the roster for the first time this century.

This game is totally unpredictable, to me. For what it’s worth, I don’t think either team has a very good year.
