On Tuesday, January 25th, the Minnesota Timberwolves face the Portland Trail Blazers for the second time this season. In their initial meeting on December 12th, the Wolves won 116-111. The Northwest Division rivals will play twice more with Minnesota hosting on March 5th and 7th.
Both teams last played on Sunday with the Wolves beating the Nets 135-126 and the Blazers building a 34 point lead against the Raptors then hanging on to win 114-105.
This past week witnessed an odd shift in the standing with many of the elite teams suffering losses while the clubs who’ve been in the basement built momentum stringing together wins.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Blazers taking two of the three contests. The Blazers hold the all-time record having bested the Timberwolves in 87 of their 124 matches.
Minnesota Timberwolves
My Western dark horse is on the rise again winning three of the last four and seven of their last 10 games to climb the ladder to the seventh seed in the West. The trio of Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards, and D’Angelo Russell has developed great offensive chemistry.
The supporting players however might be the bigger story as Jarred Vanderbilt, Patrick Beverley, Josh Okogie, and Jordan McLaughlin are all contributing to the Wolves’ improved defensive effort.
In the victory versus the Nets, the trio feasted with Russell registering a double-double of 23 points and 10 assists while Anthony Edwards led the scoring with 25 points although he had to leave the match after knocking knees
Karl-Anthony Towns overcame a 7 of 18 shooting night to amass 23 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks. Jaylen Nowell (16) points, Taurean Prince (15), and Jaden McDaniels (14) were the other double-figure scorers.
Patrick Beverley (ankle) and Anthony Edwards (leg) are questionable for Tuesday.
Portland Trail Blazers
Like the Wolves the Blazers are playing some of their best ball of the season. They’ve won four of the last five and six of eight with quality wins against the Nets, Wizards, Celtics, and Raptors.
Sunday they pounced on Toronto building a 34 point lead although they had to hang on in the second half as the Raptors finally showed up and trimmed the lead to four points with 1:24 remaining.
Fortunately, Anfernee Simons hit consecutive 3-pointers to help Portland pull ahead again and cement the win. After missing 18 games due to a punctured lung the return of CJ McCollum has given the Blazers a boost of confidence.
In the four games since returning he’s averaging 20.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.3 steals while shooting 50 percent from the perimeter. Sunday, he delivered a complete-game effort recording a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds plus six assists and two steals.
Portland couldn’t miss from behind the arc hitting 18 of 32 from deep or 56.3 percent. Nassir Little and Anfernee Simons each scored 19 while Ben McLemore scored 17 off the bench and Jusuf Nurkic delivered a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Several Blazers got banged up in Toronto as Robert Covington (finger), Nassir Little (knee), and Dennis Smith Jr. (ankle) were added to the injury report but listed as probable while Norman Powell (personal) is questionable. Larry Nance Jr. (knee), Cody Zeller (knee), and Damian Lillard (abdominal) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
Both clubs are playing their best ball of the season and enter the match with confidence. Edwards’ injury sure looked worse than what the Wolves are saying and if he can’t it’ll be a major factor.
Minny’s recent improvement is reflected in the key miscellaneous categories. To wit, in the last 10 games, the Wolves rank first in points scored off turnovers, fourth in both second chance and fast-break points, and sixth in points in the paint, albeit they aren’t sniffing the top 10 defensively in those categories.
Oh — and in those 10 games, the Wolves lead the league scoring 121.8 per match while the Blazers rank 26th scoring 106.3 points.
