Minnesota Timberwolves
It wasn’t long ago that the Timberwolves were playing some of the best basketball in the league and on the verge of gaining a stranglehold on the #3 spot in the Western Conference and the first division title in quite some time.
Then Jimmy Butler went down shortly after the All-Star Break and it’s been a struggle ever since. Minnesota is 41–31, which isn’t a bad record at all but it’s only good enough for 7th in the West, which is packed tight in the middle and down to the end. The Wolves are only in the playoffs by two games so a couple slips down the stretch could prove costly.

There really isn’t any recent word on Butler, who still hopes to return to the court before the regular season finishes but is running out of time. Meanwhile, Minnesota has turned to Jeff Teague to run the offense.
[dfads params=’groups=20599&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Teague’s numbers are up across the board with Butler out. He’s also helped Wiggins and Towns increase their scoring with his playmaking.
Minnesota is in the middle of a tough stretch. It beat Golden State and Washington before losing back-to-back games against the Spurs and Rockets. The Wolves bounced back with a crucial win against the Clippers in their last game; Los Angeles is the team directly behind Minnesota, in between it and the ninth-seeded Nuggets.
It does look like three gimmes are on the horizon, starting with Memphis and followed by Atlanta and Dallas. Some momentum with a road win in this game would do wonders for Minnesota to lock down a playoff spot and give it some wiggle room to give Butler an easy transition back before the playoffs, if he’s good to go.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers are winning games and having fun doing it. Philly won its fifth in a row in a blowout over Orlando on Thursday. Ersan Ilyasova led the team with 18 points; Joel Embiid chipped in 17 and Ben Simmons had 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
With 30 losses, Philly is alone in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, a loss ahead of Indiana and a loss behind Cleveland. As it is now, Philadelphia would host a playoff series against the Pacers with the winner likely moving on to take on Toronto in the conference semis.

But that’s getting way ahead of things. The East is packed, all the way down the the 8-seed with Milwaukee. Philly could end up anywhere 3 to 8 and it’s a mystery as to who will advance from there. It doesn’t feel like the East is as nearly locked in as the West, in terms of the top seeds being bulletproof.
As good as Philly’s season has been, it’s hard to think about how much better it could be if Markelle Fultz wasn’t a complete bust this season. The 76ers gave up what would have turned out to be a great prospect in last year’s draft and another potential high pick either this year or next year for Fultz.
That future pick the Sixers sent Boston was the Lakers’ this year. Philly will retain the pick if it’s anywhere outside 2-5, which it’s likely to be. Currently, the Lakers have the 10th-worst record in the NBA and would have to win either the second or third lottery pick for it to go to Boston. Otherwise, Boston will take either Sacramento’s or Philly’s pick next year, assuming it isn’t #1.
