Sunday, October 23rd, the Minnesota Timberwolves and OKC Thunder will already meet for the second time this season having participated in the season opener versus each other.
Minny won that match 115-108 and followed it up by losing 126-132 in overtime to the Jazz. OKC are playing their first back-to-back set having lost a closely contested match 117-122 versus the Nuggets on Saturday.
Last season the clubs played four times with the Timberwolves sweeping the season series. The Thunder hold the all-time record with 87 wins in 129 matches versus the Wolves.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Through two matches the Timberwolves are discovering why Tim Connelly gave up so much of the team’s future to add Rudy Gobert to the team.
Gobert’s presence is making a big difference, particularly on defense but there are still growing pains and the French man can’t correct bad habits the team has consistently showcased. The latter being their tendency to get too full of themselves and expect to win.

Although the Wolves are 1-1 they almost gave up the first match to the Thunder and they completely underestimated the Jazz on Friday losing 126-132. Gobert scored just nine points but pulled down 23 rebounds (10 on the offensive glass) along with a steal and two blocks.
Anthony Edwards led the scoring with 30 points while Karl-Anthony Towns dropped 27 and D’Angelo Russell chipped in 23 points.
Minny jumped on the Jazz scoring 41 points in the opening frame but lost the next two quarters and had to fight to force overtime which they also lost.
OKC Thunder
If you ask the Thunder what their season objective is the front office would say it’s to grow and develop their youth. Behind doors, they would tell you it’s to intentionally tank away the season to win the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes.
Even head coach Mark Daigneault knows what is expected but the players don’t arrive at games hoping to lose. In fact, it’s very likely Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is getting a bit annoyed with being shut down every season.
The result of the team over-exaggerating his health in order to lose games is seeping into the conversation with his reputation already taking hits as some pundits suggest he’s injury prone.
In his first game this season, he delivered in every category with 32 points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks.
With that in mind, consider where SGA might be if the franchise wasn’t purposely tanking and rebuilding. Would he have appeared in an All-Star Game, or have won Most Improved Player, or possibly even been All-NBA?
Likewise, Josh Giddey missed out on making the first All-Rookie team last season and we’ll never know how sitting him for the final 23 games impacted the voting.
Chet Holmgren’s injury that will sideline him this entire season hurts as far as the fan base getting to witness the youngster but ultimately it might help the team especially if they win the Draft Lottery.
Should that occur the Thunder will very likely halt the tanking and Sam Presti will start using some of those draft picks to add veteran assets around all his young talent.
In the loss to the Nuggets, SGA led the way with 28 points and seven assists while Josh Giddey delivered a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds plus six assists.

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. OKC Thunder NBA Prediction:
Despite splitting their first two games the Wolves could easily be 0-2 and not because of talent – – because of effort and focus.
Coach Chris Finch will have his squad dialed in for this match, particularly after losing in embarrassing fashion to the Jazz. In spite of this being the home opener for the Thunder the Wolves will win and look to do so decisively.
