Saturday, March 12th, finds the Minnesota Timberwolves facing the Miami Heat for the second and final time this season. Minnesota won the initial contest between the clubs on November 24th (113-101).
Both teams are playing the second night of a back-to-back with the Wolves losing 110-118 to the Magic while the Heat won 117-105 versus the Cavaliers.
Last season the clubs played twice splitting the season series with each team winning on their home court. The Heat holds the all-time record with 34 wins in 63 matches versus the Timberwolves.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The streaking Wolves came back down to earth on Friday with the loss to the Magic ending their six-game streak. They are clicking on both sides of the floor and the trio of Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell, and Anthony Edwards finding a great rhythm with each other.
Although the Wolves had some quality wins during the streak they faced the Thunder and Blazers twice each plus the struggling Warriors and Cavaliers.
You can only play who is on the schedule though and Minnesota is playing with confidence. My dark horse team to make the cut for the postseason is looking better and better but I have no delusions they will win a first-round series.
In the loss to the Magic, Towns registered a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds plus four assists, two steals, and two blocks. Edwards scored a team-high 25 points while Russell offered 13 points and seven assists.
Jaden McDaniels and Jaylen Nowell each scored 12 points as the other double-figure contributors.
They lost the game at the line and on the glass sending Orlando to the charity stripe 25 times versus their 13 trips and were outrebounded 49 to 37.
Patrick Beverley (ear) was injured in the last game and Jordan McLaughlin (groin) are both questionable for Saturday. McKinley Wright IV is nursing an elbow injury that will keep him out indefinitely.
Miami Heat
As I noted in the preview for the Heat – Cavs, Miami tends to bounce back with victories following a bad loss which they did on Friday. Their record following a loss is 16-7 which offers further evidence of that fact.
They also had the regular starting lineup on the court for only the 25th occasion this season as Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and Kyle Lowry have all missed time due to injury or in Lowry’s case personal reasons.
Adebayo had a particularly strong showing versus the Cavs producing a double-double of 30 points and 17 rebounds plus an assist, three steals, and a block.
Butler offered 24 points, four rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a block. Lowry wasn’t seeking his own shot but dished 10 dimes while Tyler Herro and Max Strus scored 22 and 17 points respectively as the other double-figure scorers.
Caleb Martin (knee) is questionable while Victor Oladipo (injury maintenance) is out Saturday. Markieff Morris (conditioning) is out indefinitely.

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
If the Heat show any weakness it’s facing young, lengthy athletic, and defensive clubs. Case in point, their record versus the Celtics (0-2), Cavaliers (1-2), Grizzlies (1-1), and Raptors (1-2) is 3-7.
Although the Wolves aren’t a defensive juggernaut they’ve improved substantially in that regard this season.
The Lowry – Russell matchup will be intriguing with the vet likely looking to score a bit more given Russell is the one starter who can be targeted defensively.
There are plenty of intriguing matchups to watch with Adebayo having his hands full trying to limit KAT while Butler likely gets the unenviable job of guarding Ant-Man.
I still like the Heat to get the win and I’m torn on the spread but I’m taking the Heat to cover (barely).
