Game two between the seventh-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves, and second-seeded Memphis Grizzlies tips off on Tuesday, April 19th. The Timberwolves took the opening game 130-117.
The teams split their four games this season with Memphis winning on November 8th (125-118) in overtime and January 13th (116-108) while Minnesota won the November 20th (138-95) and February 24th (119-114) matches.
Minnesota owns the slim one-game (51 wins) edge all-time of the 101 regular-season matches played. This series marks the first time the franchises are playing in the postseason.
Minnesota Timberwolves
In his playoff debut Anthony Edwards hinted he’s ready for the spotlight and eager to steal some of the shine from Ja Morant.
He led the way for the Wolves with 36 points on 12 of 23 with two rebounds, six assists, a steal and two blocks and frequently was the best defender on Ja Morant.
Star Karl-Anthony Towns bounced back from a poor play-in game effort versus the Clippers to deliver a double-double of 29 points and 13 rebounds with three assists, and a block.
Pest Patrick Beverley was quick to mix things up against the Grizzlies although Morant got whatever he wanted against him.
The quartet of Malik Beasley (23), Jaden McDaniels (15), D’Angelo Russell (10), and Patrick Beverley (10) all offered double-figure scoring.
Memphis Grizzlies
Although it’s only the second game of the series this is as close to a must-win game as you’ll get. As a young team the Grizzlies don’t want to be down 0-2 headed to Minnesota.
While the final score shows a double-digit deficit the Wolves didn’t pull away until 3:16 of clutch time when they expanded a five point lead to 13.
Although Anthony Edwards was a key for Minnesota’s offense perhaps his best attribute in his first ever playoff game was the defense he provided on Ja Morant.
The length of the Wovles proved bothersome for Morant and his Grizzlies. The other key was pace as Memphis typically feasts on opponents by turning teams over, scoring in the fast break and winning the glass.
Although they won the fast break (18-9) and paint scoring (60-50) they lost the battle of the boards 35-46.
Morant led the way with 32 points and eight assists and got to the line 20 times but was driving directly into three and four Wolves parked in the paint far too often.
Killian Tillie (back) is out Tuesday in the opening game of the series.

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
In truth, when Morant sat during the first half the Grizzlies were moving the ball and flowing offensively. That’s not to say the Grizz are better without their superstar. It’s more a product of not being as predictable and Memphis definitley needs to up their defensive intensity.
The main key for Memphis will be keeping their pace high while being more physical with the Wolves and slowing their pace. Jaren Jackson Jr. has to stay on the court and someone has to put a body on Anthony Edwards more frequently as he seemingly got whatever he wanted in Game 1.
As for Minny, they’re already ahead by virtue of winning on the road. The question is whether they maintain the intensity or approach this match satisfied in the split.
Teams don’t purposely settle it’s more of a subconscious choice but look for Patrick Beverley to try to spark his team early with the refs keeping close attention on his antics.
