Friday, November 11th the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Memphis Grizzlies meet for the first time since facing each other in round one of the 2022 playoffs (Memphis won 4-2).
They’ll play four times this year with Minnesota hosting on November 30th and January 27th and Memphis hosting the final meeting on February 10th.
Both teams last played on Wednesday with the Wolves losing 117-129 versus the Suns while the Grizzlies hung on in overtime to defeat the scrappy Spurs 124-122.
Minnesota owns the slim one-game (51 wins) edge all-time of the 101 regular-season matches played. The teams split the four-game regular season series each winning twice.
Minnesota Timberwolves
There might be a power struggle in Minnesota as the stars try to decipher whose team this is. Karl-Anthony Towns immediately became the Wolves’ cornerstone when he was drafted.
However, the failure of the franchise to improve regardless of who the club added to the roster begged the question if he should remain the number one star of the club.
Given the rise of Anthony Edwards and what appears to be some friction between him and KAT the question is whether these two can find the perfect balance to make the Wolves successful. To this point, they are both scoring 21.3 points per match.
Through 12 games the club isn’t close to expectations. The big offseason addition of Rudy Gobert hasn’t seamlessly fit yet, but he’s averaging a double-double of 13.8 points and 13.6 rebounds.
The Wolves allow 115.8 points per game ranking tied for 23rd while they are effectively holding opponents to 44.5 percent from the field where they are tied for fourth best but have work to do on the perimeter allowing opponents to shoot 37.7 percent ranking 24th.
In contrast, Minnesota scores 114 points per game ranking 11th overall. The Wolves rank ninth shooting 47.5 percent from the field but struggle mightily from the perimeter shooting 32.5 percent which ranks 24th.
Austin Rivers (illness) and Naz Reid (illness) are questionable for Friday.
Memphis Grizzlies
Offensively, the Grizzlies are among the top squads in the league scoring 116.8 points per game which ranks sixth.
The Grizzlies are tied in 14th with the Wizards shooting 47 percent from the field and among the league leaders shooting 38.6 percent from the perimeter which ranks sixth
The Grizzlies allow opponents to score 115.3 per game which ranks 22nd. A concerted effort to improve the defense has witnessed quick improvements as Memphis’ foes shoot 46.1 percent from the field (tied 12th) and 34.7 percent from the perimeter (tied ninth).
The latter is more than a ten-step ladder rise in less than a week (and that includes the crazy Spurs overtime game).
Ziaire Williams (knee – mid-Dec) will miss four to six weeks. Jackson Jr. (foot) and Danny Green (ACL) are out indefinitely.

The Wolves look a mess — discombobulated on both sides of the floor but they’ll be dialed in for this game given the rivalry created between these clubs last year in the playoffs.
Memphis is definitely more cohesive and their record is evidence of that fact — BUT– they seem to be flirting with disaster. Far too frequently the Grizz build double-digit leads and give them up or get down double-figures and have to battle back.
They need to stop that bad habit because eventually, it could backfire, and not just a loss, but someone in their core could get hurt because they had to come back on the court to secure the win (yeah – I’m talking Morant).
As for this game, it’s doubtful either side needs much motivation READ: there’s no love lost between them.
Post series KAT said ‘they’ (Wolves and Grizz) were the future of the NBA implying all championships would be going through these teams. Odd thing to say when you’ve yet to win a playoff series IN YOUR CAREER!
