First thing to remember, the road Timberwolves come into this one off a 108-101 road loss to the LA Clippers. They entered that one as 6.5-point underdogs and covered for the first time in four games and just the second time in their last five outings.
The home Lakers come into this one off a 123-117 road loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. They entered that one as 3-point underdogs and covered for the fourth time in five outings.
Without any further ado, let’s get to this Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Los Angeles Lakers matchup.
ATS
The Timberwolves are 30-34 overall against the spread on the season. Also, they are 13-17 ATS as the away team and 4-6 ATS in their last 10 overall.
Additionally, the Lakers are 30-32-1 against the spread on the season. Also, they are 15-14 ATS as the home team and 5-5 ATS in their last 10 overall.
Season Series
So far, these teams have faced off once during the 2022-23 regular season.
- Friday, October 28 @ Minnesota: Timberwolves 111-102
Friday marks the second of three meetings between these two squads.
Timberwolves
The Timberwolves aren’t a serious NBA team right now. It’s unlikely they will be while Karl-Anthony Towns is out, but even when he returns, there’s little to buy into as far as the Rudy Gobert experiment has gone this season.
Although Minnesota enters this game off a win over the Clippers, the ‘Wolves had lost three straight before that and have lost seven of their last 12.
So far this season, the Timberwolves are scoring 115.4 points per game, which is good enough for top-10 status. But when looking at advanced stats, their Offensive Efficiency drops all the way down to 23rd.
With that in mind, it’s clear that the ‘Wolves are relying on both cheap and transition buckets with the league’s second-fastest pace.
Obviously, this team struggles making plays at times in the half-court, and for that reason, controlling the pace will be key against L.A.
Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Los Angeles Lakers Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Jaylen Nowell, SG (Day-to-Day)
- Karl-Anthony Towns, C (OUT—calf)
Los Angeles Lakers
The big news out of Los Angeles this week is the injury to LeBron James. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer sustained a right foot tendon injury in a national TV game against Dallas on Sunday, and he’ll be sidelined for at least three weeks, which is when he will be re-evaluated.
That is a brutal blow to Los Angeles’ playoff chances. As far as Friday is concerned, the news gets worse with D’Angelo Russell being ruled out as well, and Anthony Davis still day-to-day.
The good news for the Lakers is that Minnesota won’t be able to throw off their groove just by picking up the pace. At least, not entirely.
We know LeBron is the engine that makes the Lakers go, but the team overall is seventh in scoring at 117 points per night and also fourth in pace.
If Minnesota tries to outrun the Lakers on Friday, L.A. should be able to keep up.

- Finally, Timberwolves are 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
Make sure you check on the status of Anthony Davis ahead of this game. I’d bet he plays, considering his absence Wednesday night was for rest purposes, but his presence or non-presence should be the difference-maker here with L.A.’s two best other players sidelined.
Assuming AD Plays…
If Davis is in, the Lakers should be able to rally. At least, they’ll need to rally if they have any shot at the postseason.
With James out, the odds are stacked against them. But getting into the play-in tournament is about winning one game at a time.
That starts on Friday, and it’ll start with a win both straight up and against the spread.
