Sunday, December 8th, finds the Minnesota Timberwolves tipping off versus the Los Angeles Lakers in their first meeting of the 2019-20 season.
Last season, the teams met four times with the Timberwolves taking three of the four games. The Lakers hold the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 78 of their 114 matches.
Having erased a 10 point deficit and Karl-Anthony Towns at the line with 1.1 seconds remaining, the Wolves looked poised to win but a strange series of events shifted everything.
Towns missed the first free throw, Jordan Bell’s untucked shirt led to a tech for delay of game. Still, after Danilo Gallinari hit the technical free throw all KAT had to do was miss his second to seal the win but the shot fell in.
Then Steven Adams threw a football pass to Dennis Schroder who dropped in the basket to force overtime. The stunned Wolves never recovered as the Thunder kept the momentum and won.
It was reverse deja vu of Andrew Wiggins’ hail Mary half court shot two seasons earlier.
The 139-127 loss was Minnesota’s third in a row and seventh in the past 10 games.
In the loss, six Wolves scored in double-figures. Jeff Teague was top scorer with 32 but he was also the player Schroder scored the game-tying bucket against. KAT scored 30 while Robert Covington (15), Shabazz Napier (13), Josh Okogie (12) and Jordan Bell (12) all contributed.
KAT leads the team in most categories including scoring (26.2 points), rebounds (11.9), field goal percentage (51.2 percent) and blocks (1.4). Jeff Teague’s 7.5 assists and Robert Covington 1.3 steals is tops.
Andrew Wiggins missed the last game with a left thumb sprain while Naz Reid is nursing a sore right shoulder. Both are questionable for Sunday. Jake Layman (toe) is out indefinitely.
Los Angeles Lakers
It’s been a strong week for the Lakers who took to the road after their streak ended versus the Mavericks at home.
Wins versus the Nuggets, Jazz, and Blazers have punctuated LA’s ability to beat the top-seeded clubs winning by an average of 19 points.
In the win over the Blazers, the superstars led the way, Anthony Davis registered 39 points and nine rebounds while LeBron James served up 31 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.
Kyle Kuzma (15) and JaVale McGee (13) offered the other double-digit scores.
On the season the team leader board features LA’s two superstars with Davis topping the points (26.1), rebounds (9.1) block (2.7) and steal (1.4) categories while James is leading assists (10.7) and field goal percent (49.5%).
In the Blazers game, Troy Daniels suffered a knee injury and Rajon Rondo tweaked his hamstring forcing both to exit and uncertainty about their status for Sunday.
Avery Bradley (leg) is out until mid-December. DeMarcus Cousins is rehabbing the torn ACL in his right knee and hopes to return for postseason play.

Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Los Angeles Lakers NBA Prediction:
The Wolves are spiraling downward while the Lakers look as strong as they have all season. Unlike most teams that don’t have the personnel to defend Towns, the Lakers have Davis who is currently playing so well defensively he could be the leading candidate for DPoY.
His presence will make KAT’s life miserable and force him to defend which will tire him out.

Both clubs can put points on the board but the Lakers’ defense will be the difference.
