Game 2 of the conference semi-finals between the third-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves and second-seeded Denver Nuggets occurs on Monday. Minnesota stole the home-court advantage with an impressive 106-99 victory in Game 1.

For the past two seasons, these teams have split the season series each winning twice. Denver holds the all-time record between the squads with 89 victories in 145 matches.

Logically, I should’ve seen the upset coming in Game 1 given the Wolves were healthier and looked more cohesive in the first round. Granted they had an easier opponent but all the points I outlined in the initial preview proved accurate.
Anthony Edwards’ star is shining so bright and he’s ready for the spotlight. Each time it looked like the Nuggets would flip the switch he made a pivotal defensive play, scored a momentum-shifting bucket, or set up a teammate. Edwards finished with 43 points.
The x-factor and the person Michael Malone will have to address is Naz Reid who scored 16 points versus a Nuggets bench who scored 20 in total.
Timberwolves Stats
Through the regular season, Minnesota ranked tied for 17th on offense (114.6) and first defensively (108.4) while they were a plus +6.3 net differential, ranking third overall.
In the playoffs, the Wolves rank first offensively (121.6), and fifth defensively (108.9) with a plus +12.7 net differential ranking third overall.
The Wolves rode the middle with a 45-41-1 record against the spread through 87 matches this season.

Rust was evident in Game 1, particularly by Jamal Murray who reportedly barely participated in practices leading up to Saturday because he was resting his ailing calf.
Murray did something he’s never done in the postseason going an entire half without scoring. Although he got rolling in the second half (finishing with 22 points) the absence of his first-half offensive production was probably the difference in the final score.
Denver already knew the Wolves would be a difficult opponent but they witnessed how much stronger Minny is with Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid available (both missed the series last season with injury).
Nuggets Stats
In the season, Denver ranked fifth offensively (117.8) and eighth defensively (112.3) with a net differential of plus +5.5 ranking fourth overall.
This postseason, the Nuggets rank eighth offensively (112.4) and eighth defensively (110.6) with a plus +1.9 net differential ranking seventh.
Despite their overall placement, the Nuggets aren’t as solid against the spread with a 40-46-2 record through 88 contests.

The key takeaway from the series opener is the Wolves’ roster is best suited to give Nikola Jokic problems. Minny’s trio of centers can each invest time on Jokic causing the likely MVP to use a ton of energy.
Rudy Gobert (4) and Karl-Anthony Towns (5) got into foul trouble but they made Nikola work, resulting in him uncharacteristically looking sped up and collecting below his normal triple-double standard finishing with 32 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists.
A few red flags for Minny were they had to rely on Edwards so much for their production and KAT will continue to be in foul trouble, especially when he guards Jokic.
Last season, Denver lost a single game at home in the postseason (to the Heat in the Finals) and it’s unlikely they lose consecutive games although this is a must-win for them.
The Wolves can come out relaxed with nothing to lose, having already got the split whereas Malone will need his starting five to have more balanced scoring and find someone (anyone?) on the bench to be an X-factor.
I’m taking the Nuggets to bounce back and assume Murray will play although he’s officially listed as questionable. Above all, fans should hope this semis goes the distance as it has the potential to be the most exciting series of this postseason.
