Minnesota Timberwolves

Going into Tuesday night’s games, Minnesota is one of seven teams in the Western Conference with a winning record. That’s despite losing at home to Memphis the last time out.

So even if the T-Wolves aren’t in the greatest form ahead of this one, at least they’re well rested. Minnesota had three days off before the Memphis game and has had another two since then. This will be just their second game in seven full days.

Jake Layman missed the game, his fifth in a row, with a toe sprain. You might be asking, who’s Jake Layman? And what’s the big deal with his toe?

The loss isn’t an insignificant one for a Minnesota team that struggles to shoot from the outside and score in general, on occasion.

The fourth-year pro was enjoying the best season of his career (his first in Minnesota), to date, before the injury. He averages 10.5 points per game this season on solid shooting numbers.

All it means is more pressure on Karl-Anthony Towns and less reliable spot-up shooters for Andrew Wiggins to find when he’s penetrating.

Dallas Mavericks

Dallas, meanwhile, got a confidence-boosting win on Monday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers.

The Mavs knocked off the 17–2 Lakers, 114–100. Luka Doncic had twenty-seven points and fell a rebound short of another triple-double. Delon Wright and Justin Jackson combined to score thirty-two points off the bench. Each hit a trio of threes.

So that’s Dallas. It is one of three teams to have beaten the Lakers this season (the Clippers and Raptors being the other two) but also lost twice to the Knicks.

The Mavericks’ fans will choose to look at that ceiling for now. With one of the brightest stars in the game, a legitimate second banana and an at least interesting mix of young talent and experience on the margins, Dallas has some pieces to play with.

After a great bench game in Los Angeles, Dallas could fall back in this one. Its offense depends a lot on the supporting cast, which is why it has been up and down so far.
