Wednesday, January 4th, the Milwaukee Bucks and Toronto Raptors meet for the first of four scheduled matches this season. Milwaukee will host matches on January 17th and March 19th while the clubs will close out the series back in Toronto on April April 9th.
Milwaukee is completing a back-to-back set having beat the Wizards 123-113 on Tuesday while the Raptors lost 114-122 to the Pacers on Monday.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Raptors sweeping the series. The Bucks hold the all-time record having bested the Raptors in 54 of their 98 matches

Milwaukee Bucks
It’s been a bit of a slog of late for the Bucks who are navigating the typical bumps and bruises of a long season although it’s their Big 3 that have been impacted most.
After sitting in the last game due to a sore knee, Giannis Antetokounmpo returned and put on a show dropping a double-double of 55 points and 10 rebounds (plus seven assists).
Jrue Holiday was eased back after missing three games and subbed in off the bench.
Opponents score the sixth-fewest points versus the Bucks with 110.7 and limit opponents to (45.6%) from the field and 35.1% from deep ranking fourth and ninth respectively.
Offensively, the Bucks score 112.4 points per game (19th), while shooting 45.6% from the field and 34.2% from the perimeter ranking 25th and 21st in the latter two categories.
Khris Middleton is out.
Toronto Raptors
When things don’t go according to plan it often leads to finger-pointing something Toronto has avoided during the Masai Ujiri era. This season, that’s not been the case as ‘leaks’ to local media led to questionable articles insinuating sophomore Scottie Barnes wasn’t as invested as he needed to be.
Flash forward and it’s clear Barnes is anything but the problem as he’s averaged 18 points, nine rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.8 steals, and a block in the five games since those articles.
While Fred VanVleet avoided initial criticism because of his status on the team and back spasms (side note: Barnes has played through ankle/knee/wrist injuries) his comments off the court and play on it are concerning.
FVV is expected to opt-out of his contract ($22.8M for 2023-24) with designs on signing an even more lucrative deal – – a red flag for the Raptors considering how he’s played so far.
Teams are consistently blowing by him on straight-line drives while he’s shooting 37.6% from the field and 32.7% from deep. Compared to last season, his shot attempts are only slightly lower (15.4 vs. 16.9) while his usage rate is barely impacted (23.7% down to 22.4%).
And while his story arc has offered a compelling Cinderella NBA tale the question is whether his regression is only because of his current injury or if VanVleet is yet another undersized guard on the same career path as Kemba Walker.
Otto Porter Jr’s toe injury is NOT progressing so it doesn’t look like he’ll be returning mid-January as originally expected.

Monday night when FVV subbed back into the game Toronto had the lead but the next 7:18 was telling as Pacers sought him out on defense flying by him to the rim and adding insult to injury, left him wide open on the parameter.
And therein lies the rub — Nurse refuses to call out VanVleet for his defensive lapses and continues to play him. Perhaps that’s because the REAL player Masai Ujiri wants to move isn’t Gary Trent Jr — but Fred VanVleet.
If that’s the case they better hope the man who bets on himself can summon a nice run prior to the deadline to increase his trade value.
That’ll be tough versus the Bucks who have dramatically improved their perimeter defense this season.
Toronto has the rest advantage but needs to use the bench or that benefit is moot. NOTE TO NURSE — it’s time to FREE Jeff Dowtin because he CAN stop the straight-line drives to the rim.
Let’s assume Nurse uses Achiuwa more in this match and learns from his error of playing FVV too much, particularly late.
