On Saturday, February 5th, the Milwaukee Bucks, and Portland Trail Blazers will meet for the first of two occasions this season. The Bucks will host the second meeting on February 15th.
The Bucks arrive well-rested having been off since Tuesday when they bested the Wizards 112-98 while Portland is playing a back-to-back set having faced the Thunder and lost 93-96 on Friday.
Last season, the teams played twice with Milwaukee winning both contests. The Bucks hold the all-time record having bested the Blazers in 77 of their 129 matches.
Milwaukee Bucks
Giannis Antetokounmpo will start in the All-Star Game and be joined by teammate Khris Middleton who was selected by the coaches as a reserve.
They enter this match in a dog fight to win the top seed in the East along with the Bulls, Heat, 76ers, and Cavaliers but of that group, the Bucks don’t necessarily seem quite as invested or worried for that matter.
‘The Bucks record through the last 15 games is 7-8 while they dealt with a few injuries but nothing like the Bulls or Heat have dealt with. While they’ve lost some close matches all you have to do is look at Giannis in the post-game media eating wings to see how worried he is…
Hint- he’s not worried at all. That’s the swagger that comes from being the defending champions but at some point, you have to believe they’ll need to start ramping up their efforts.
Especially without Brook Lopez or PJ Tucker on this roster which could pose problems against teams with quality big men like the 76ers Joel Embiid. Ultimately, Milwaukee has to be careful they don’t get too cavalier in their confidence as bad habits have a tendency to stick!
George Hill (neck) is doubtful to play Saturday versus the Blazers while Lopez (back) is out indefinitely.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Blazers kicked off the march to the trade deadline sending Norman Powell and Robert Covington to the Clippers in exchange for Eric Bledsoe, Justise Winslow, Keon Johnson as well as a 2025 second-round draft pick.
It’s a bit of odd trade for both sides given Bledsoe is another smallish guard and neither Powell or Covington will help the Clippers with their greatest needs — playmaking.
Diving deeper, the Blazers stated they wanted to clear up cap space while this move pushes the Clippers well over the luxury tax. Presumably, these are just the first of a few moves both franchises will make prior to the deadline.
In both cases, the teams are trying to build around their superstars – Damian Lillard in the Blazers case. Pulling from that thought this move will allow Portland to lock down Anfernee Simons.
It still seems likely CJ McCollum is will be moved unless interim GM Joe Cronin believes he can move Bledsoe plus other assets to get what he desires back.
Larry Nance Jr. (knee) is questionable for Friday. Cody Zeller (knee surgery), Damian Lillard (abdominal surgery), and Nassir Little (shoulder) are all out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Portland is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games.
- Milwaukee is 5-10 ATS in their last 15 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Portland’s last 6 games at home.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Milwaukee’s last 5 games on the road.
Free Milwaukee Bucks vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
The Blazers could still be shorthanded awaiting Bledsoe, Winslow, and Johnson to clear medicals and get integrated with the team. That plus the fact Portland played Friday plays into the hands of the Bucks.
Although the Bucks could easily blow out Portland considering the Blazers have averaged 89 points in their last three games I like the under.
