Thursday, February 10th, finds the Milwaukee Bucks playing the Phoenix Suns for the first of two meetings this season. Milwaukee will host the second meeting on March 6th.
This is the first time since the NBA Finals these clubs will face each other and while both teams have dealt with injury adversity it’s the Suns who lead the league in wins and seem more driven to nab the top seed.
Not that the Bucks don’t care about winning but having won the championship they are approaching the season with a more relaxed attitude buoyed by the confidence of being the reigning champs.
Both teams last played on Tuesday with the Bucks routing the Lakers 131-116 in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score while the Suns pulled out another clutch time win defeating the 76ers 114-109.
Milwaukee Bucks
Prior to the recent win streak there were some red flags in Milwaukee. In the 15 games between January 3rd and February 1st the Bucks were 7-8 and during that segment slipped to 18th defensively and 20th offensively.
Then Milwaukee flipped the script winning four games in a row yet that might be a bit of fools gold given those victories occurred against middling teams including the Wizards, Blazers, Clippers (post trade), and Lakers.
The reality is when the Big 3 of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday and Khris Middleton are all healthy and playing they have a record of 23-5 with a net rating of over nine points.
On the other hand, if you consider they are 12-11 against the teams seeded eighth or higher that should be cause for concern.
Isolating on the East they’ve played the Bulls and 76ers once winning both matches and are up 2-0 versus the Nets with two to play. That’s the good news, but they were swept by the Raptors (0-3) and trail the Celtics, Cavs and Heat series 1-2 with one game to play.
That may not be overly concerning for this confident squad but you have to believe a matchup versus Toronto will summon old demons or if Brook Lopez doesn’t return having to play the 76ers would be problematic.
Grayson Allen (hip) and Grant Hill (neck) are questionable for Thursday while Brook Lopez (back) remains out indefinitely.
Phoenix Suns
Although the regular season is meant to leverage seeding, test different lineups, grow the young talent and prepare for the post season there are some matches that matter more than others.
For the Suns this game is one of those situations as they face the team who beat them in the NBA Finals. Both clubs will downplay the importance of winning but Phoenix wants to beat the Bucks — make no mistake about that fact.
Phoenix enters having beat the 76ers in what could be a cut and paste template example of how they’ve won copious games this season. With 4:32 remaining Joel Embiid put the 76ers up by two but from that point forward the Suns outscored Philly 17 to 10.
It’s no coincidence the Suns are the best clutch time team with a 22-3 record in those situations. Much of it has to do with Chris Paul and what seems to be his ability to calm his entire team getting them to make the right plays and find a way to win.
Abdel Nader (knee), Landry Shamet (ankle), Cameron Payne (wrist), Dario Saric (knee), and Frank Kaminsky (knee) are all out indefinitely
