Miami freed up its depth chart a bit on Wednesday by shipping both Tyler Johnson and Wayne Ellington out of town in exchange for Phoenix’s Ryan Anderson.
This move accomplishes a couple of things: it trims some of the fat off of Miami’s busy backcourt and clears the path for guys like Dion Waiters to get more playing time. It also saves the team money, both against the cap and the luxury tax because Anderson’s deal, though large, isn’t quite as large as Johnson’s. Ellington had fallen out of the rotation completely.
Both guys were key members of a team that won the Southeast Division and eventually lost in the first round last season. Both were also fan favorites during the run.
Johnson will play in Phoenix next season for over $19 million before hitting the open market. The Suns are expected to buyout Ellington, who will then be able to sign with a team of his choice. He could make a nice impact on a contending team looking for shooting.
With Derrick Jones Jr. out for at least the rest of the month and Goran Dragic still not coming back until after the All-Star Break, the Heat could actually be a little thin in the backcourt for the time being.
Josh Richardson and Dion Waiters will get plenty of time next to Justise Winslow. Both are quality DFS looks in this matchup, which could play fast.
Sacramento lost at home for the first time in over a month on Wednesday, 127–101. Buddy Hield had 20 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double this season but James Harden had yet another 30-point game and the Rockets’ supporting cast did its job this time around.
The front office also made two trades on Wednesday, acquiring Alec Burks from Cleveland for Iman Shumpert and then getting Harrison Barnes from Dallas for Justin Jackson and Zach Randolph.
The Barnes deal shows Sacramento is serious about contending for the playoffs not only this season, but next as well. Barnes signed a lucrative deal with Dallas. He will almost certainly opt into his final year player option next season, worth about $25 million.
The deal makes sense for the Kings because Barnes should slide into Shumpert’s role as the starting small forward well. He provides good two-way play and some veteran leadership and then his contract will come off the books next season, hopefully, if you’re the Kings, after a playoff appearance or two.
