The Eastern Conference semi-finals between the top-seeded Miami Heat and fourth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers continue with Game 4 on Sunday, May 8th. Miami leads the series 2-1 after Philly got back their star and won Game 3.
The 76ers took care of the Toronto Raptors in six games (4-2) while the Miami Heat defeated the Atlanta Hawks in a gentleman’s sweep (4-1).
The teams split the 2021-22 season series 2-2 with the 76ers winning on January 15th (109-98) and March 21st (113-106) while the Heat won on December 15th (101-96) and March 5th (99-82).
The Heat holds the all-time advantage having won 67 times of the club’s 131 regular-season meetings.
This is the third time the clubs are playing in the postseason with each team taking one series. The Heat won the 4-1 in the first round of 2011 while the 76ers returned the favor in 2018 winning 4-1 in the first round.
Miami Heat
Kyle Lowry returned to the floor in Game 3 back in his home town and while he was scoreless it’s not indicative of the difference he made on the floor.
The veteran never has played well after long absences so being held scoreless wasn’t that surprising but he did positively impact his teammates with the offense looking more fluid when he was on the floor.
Jimmy Butler did his best to keep Miami in the mix with 33 points and nine rebounds. The only other player to score in double-digits was Tyler Herro with 14 but on an inefficient 5 of 15.
Similarly, with Joel Embiid back, Bam Adebayo wasn’t able to feast like he had in Miami and was held to nine points (2 of 9) and just three boards.
Lowry (hamstring), Herro (ankle), P.J. Tucker (calf), Max Strus (hamstring), Caleb Martin (ankle), Gabe Vincent (knee), and Dewayne Dedmon (cold) are all questionable.
Philadelphia 76ers
Joel Embiid’s return to the court had a hugely positive impact for the 76ers. While the center wasn’t his typical best he changed the dynamic for Philly with the floor opening more for everyone else and his defense made an impact.
After a week off the floor and due to the concussion not being able to be active, he struggled with his shot finishing with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds although he collected eight points at the charity stripe (8 of 10).
Tyrese Maxey and Danny Green both scored 21 points to lead Philly’s scoring effort and were hot from deep scoring 12 of the Sixers 16 triples.
James Harden continued to struggle with his shot (4 of 11) finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds, plus six assists, and was extremely cold from deep (1 of 7).
NBA Betting Trends:
- Miami is 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games.
- Philadelphia is 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Miami’s last 8 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Philadelphia’s last 8 games.
- Heat are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a road underdog.
- 76ers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a home favorite.
Free Miami Heat vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Even with Embiid back Philly’s bench continued to struggle to score posting a cumulative 13 points. That’s going to be a problem if Miami returns to their typical output.
While Lowry is listed as questionable he typically struggles after long absences so if he does play it won’t be surprising if he becomes an x-factor in this game.
In spite of leading the series, Miami’s offense has yet to reach its typical standards, and while there are a host of Heat players dealing with injuries this team tends to respond to losses with aggressive efforts.
Embiid should also have a better rhythm but I like the Heat to bounce back and take a commanding lead back home for Game 5.
