Monday, March 21st, the Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers play for the fourth and final occasion of this season. The Heat lead the season series 2-1 with wins on December 15th (101-96) and March 5th (99-82) while the 76ers won the January 15th meeting (109-98).
Philadelphia is playing a back-to-back set having lost 88-93 to the Raptors on Sunday while the Heat has been off since Friday following a 120-108 victory versus the Thunder.
Miami Heat
In the past few weeks, the Heat have been fending off the Bucks, 76ers, Bulls, and Cavaliers all of whom were within a game or two of the top rung in the East. Flash to present day and each of those squads have fallen off the pace with the Celtics being the only team who’ve made up ground.
Entering week 22 with 11 games remaining Miami has opened a three-game margin on Milwaukee, 3.5 games on 76ers and Celtics while the Bulls (5.5) and Cavaliers (6) have fallen off the pace and are in jeopardy of dropping into the play-in tournament.
Miami has won nine of their last 12 games and continues to be successful while still having barely had the core five starters available. It’s very likely the Nets will be the seventh seed given their talent but they could lose the first play-in game and end up eighth. That’s the one part of the play-in that doesn’t make sense.
The NBA rewards teams who finish in the top four of each conference with home court, the teams who tank improve their lottery odds, and the teams who suffer early injuries and bounce back to finish ninth or 10th get a shot at becoming a playoff participant.
But, what is the value of winning the top seed if a team like the Nets could end up being your first-round opponent? Some have suggested the top seed in each conference should be able to select the team they play as a reward for earning that seed and I’m in agreement.
Why else bust your tail to win the top seed if it means potentially having a harder path to the finals than a team that finishes sixth for example.
Jimmy Butler (ankle) and Caleb Martin (knee) are questionable while Victor Oladipo (back) and Gabe Vincent (toe) were downgraded to out on Monday.
Philadelphia 76ers
Since James Harden hit the hardwood for Philly the team is 8-4 but the record is deceiving. Among the eight victories three were against lottery teams, another three against teams who are reeling (Bulls, Cavs x2), and only two wins were against teams currently performing well (Timberwolves, Mavericks).
The four losses (Heat, Nets, Nuggets, Raptors) feature clubs who are hot as they hit the stretch, three of whom could be opponents in the postseason. Losing to Toronto who was missing both their All-Star Fred VanVleet and best defender (OG Anunoby) once again raises red flags about this Philly club.
The obvious problem is the lack of depth on the bench, but the bigger glaring issue is the play of Harden against the better teams. Repeatedly on Sunday, Harden tried to draw fouls instead of just playing to get the bucket. He scored seven of his 17 points at the line via his 10 free throw attempts.
In the fourth quarter, he played poorly, turning the ball over on three consecutive sets to start the frame with four of his turnovers occurring in the fourth. He scored two points in the frame both at the charity stripe (2-4) missed a 3-pointer, layups, and elbowed Chris Boucher in the head to draw a flagrant foul and seal the loss.
The 76ers have no players on the injury list, but Joel Embiid’s back is definitely bothering him as his movement was visibly hampered on Sunday.

Free Miami Heat vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
The Heat have already beaten the Harden era 76ers and will look to take the season series with a win Monday. Philly needs to clean up a lot after giving up 20 offensive rebounds and losing the overall rebound battle (56-40), fast-break scoring (16-10), and points in the paint (50-40).
