Wednesday, October 17 finds the two Florida teams facing off. Miami is expected to relevant in the Eastern Conference but Orlando still seems to be a long ways off.
The key for the Heat is always the health of Hassan Whiteside. For right now he is good to go and even though the game is changing he is still a difference maker on both ends. Miami looks like it will be back in the playoffs but is not really a contender.
Orlando won ony 25 games last season. I like the draft addition of top pick Mo Bamba but have no faith in this team to get the most out of its players. They have a new coach so maybe things are going in the right direction.
Miami is coming off a playoff loss against Philadelphia. The 76ers are “the” up and coming team in the NBA but I thought Miami actually acquitted themselves pretty well in that series. They could have been winners without it being a total shock.
Miami did not do anything to really change how this team looks. They are hoping for better health from Whiteside and will rely on the sneaky scoring of Goran Dragic to get them back to the playoffs where depending on the matchup this team can be dangerous.
I like their role players but I am not sure how much more can really be expected from the likes of JOsh Richardson, Tyler Johnson, Justise Winslow, Kelly Olynyk et al.
Maybe Olynyk can be a more prolific scorer as a modern 5 but you lose rebounding and defense whih this program still values heavily.
Last year these teams split their four regular season games with both winning at home and on the road. Miami has probably stood still coming into the season whereas Orlando might have improved but this can be an early barometer kind of game.
Miami is going to be an interesting team to watch early. Their continuity might give them some early advantages but overall they seem middle of the pack in the East.
The last time Orlando had a record above .500 and/or made the playoffs was the shortened 2011-12 season. This season that is probably too much to expect but demonstrating improvement in a real way seems possible.
With the addition of Mo Bamba they have what looks like a stopper on the defensive end and someone with a nice basketball IQ. Overall their frontcourt looks like a strength but the backcourt is a jumble right now.
D.J. Augustin and Evan Fournier look like the starters at the 1 and 2 positions. Augustin can still play but should be a backup in the league and Fournier looks more like a player of opportunity than excellence – he led the team at 17ppg last season.
There isn’t really anyone pressing them either, other than maybe Jerian Grant. Quite simply, this might be the worst set of guards in the league, in a league that is more and more perimeter oriented that is tough to overcome.
The best thing about Orlando is probably their length. Bamba is crazy long but they also have Nikola Vucevic, a craft 7 footer, Timofey Mozgov, a beefy one and three others at 6’10 plus Aaron Gordon. That is a lot of length so this team should at least be decent on the boards.

Free Miami Heat vs. Orlando Magic NBA Prediction:
Miami is a small favourite in this one, which makes sense. If Orlando is improved it would seem that the market would take a little while to get behind that.
The Heat are definitely the better team. These teams have different strengths but they definitely have the more reliable crew and odds are a win and a cover go together.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Heat -2.5
Whiteside might feel a little bothered by the length of the Magic but in the end he will have a strong outing and the perimeter guys will eat them up. A fairly easy win to start the season for Miami.
