It’s desperation time for the New York Knicks as they return home from South Beach on the brink of elimination after the Miami Heat swept their two home games to take a 3-1 series lead including a 109-101 victory Monday.
Of the four semi-finals, this series has never seemed to be in question as the one loss by Miami came without Jimmy Butler playing and still required clutch time to decide.
ATS
At this time, the Heat are 39-51-3 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 20-25-1 ATS as the away team. Additionally, the Knicks are 49-39-3 against the spread this season. Also, they are 21-22-2 ATS as the home team
Season Series
This season the Knicks won the regular season series 3-1 including victories on February 2nd (106-104), March 3rd (122-120), and March 29th (101-92) while the Heat won the March 22nd match (127-120).
Last season the clubs played three times with the Heat taking two of the three regular-season contests. The Knicks hold the all-time record with 69 wins in 134 matches versus the Heat.
This is the sixth occasion these clubs are meeting in the postseason with the Knicks holding the 3-2 advantage while Miami won the last meeting between the squads 4-1 in 2012.
Miami Heat
Trying to pinpoint why the Heat have dominated this series isn’t a simple task. The obvious choices are pointing to Playoff Jimmy or Heat Culture but it’s so much more than that.
Erik Spoelstra has outcoached Tom Thibodeau (and for what it’s worth – it’s an absolute travesty Spo has never won Coach of the Year honors) and the veteran leadership is a big factor.
Kevin Love got chained to the bench in Cleveland but has been a vital part of the Heat’s success. However, the main x-factor in my humble opinion is Kyle Lowry.
He brings championship mettle to the fold but it’s how he’s running the reserve unit and impacting the game overall. Having Lowry is like having a coach on the floor (or the bench where he frequently is yelling out instructions).
There are a handful of players who are adept at reading momentum shifts and then being able to do something to stop it — Lowry is in that mix.

New York Knicks
With apologies to the Knicks faithful, this series is over but there is still much to celebrate in the Mecca. New York landed their man by bringing in Jalen Brunson last summer and is once again a coveted destination for free agents.
They won a playoff series for the first time since 2013 while management is taking the right approach by slowly rebuilding their core and not giving away the farm to make precipitous moves.
The latter was best demonstrated when they refused to cough up copious draft picks and young talent to add Donovan Mitchell who’ll likely end up in New York eventually anyway. That the Knicks beat Mitchell’s Cavs only served as evidence of why patience was the right choice.
As for this series, Jalen Brunson, RJ Barrett, and the young core are getting invaluable experience while perhaps confirming it’s time to move on from Julius Randle who is highly skilled but frequently hurts the team both in his decision-making and demeanor.
Stats
As can be seen, the Knicks are one of the best defensive teams in the association they limit opponents to 113.1 points which is 13th-ranked while possessing the third-best opponent field goal percentage of 46.2% and also ranks 12th for opponent perimeter percentage of 35.7%.
So far, offensively, the Knicks score 116 points per game ranking 11th while shooting 46.7% from the field and 35.4% from the perimeter ranking 20th and 19th respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Immanuel Quickly PG (questionable—knee)
- Jericho Sims C (OUT—shoulder)

Free Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks NBA Prediction:
Oddsmakers favor the Knicks to stay alive via a win at MSG but I’ll point you back to the first round when the Heat marched into Milwaukee and took out the Bucks (the team most favored to win Larry O’B) and sent them fishing.
Butler has led the Heat but other than Game 1 hasn’t had a ‘definitive Jimmy Buckets game’ — I suspect this might be that game. Also, keep an eye on Lowry who tends to thrive in close-out game opportunities.
