Friday, February 25th the Miami Heat and New York Knicks play for the second of three scheduled meetings this season. Miami won the initial match on January 26th (110-96) and will host the final meeting between the clubs on March 25th.
The teams return from the break with the Heat last playing a week ago Thursday in a 111-107 double-overtime victory versus the Pelicans while the Knicks played the night prior losing 106-111 to the Nets.
In history, the Knicks own the advantage winning 65 of the clubs’ 128 meetings. Last season the teams played three times with the Heat sweeping the season series.
Miami Heat
As the teams return from the All-Star break the Heat hold the top seed in the East in a virtual tie with the Bulls but with the advantage given they possess a better division and conference record than the Bulls have.
They have the 16th ranked strength of schedule to close the season – – another advantage given the Bucks, Bulls, and 76ers have the first, second, and 12th hardest strength of schedule.
In addition, the 76ers are integrating James Harden while the Bucks and Bulls are both navigating injuries while Miami is the healthiest they’ve been (or at least their core is) all season.
A crazy stat I heard the week prior to the break was the starting five of Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Kyle Lowry, PJ Tucker, and Duncan Robinson had played a total of 59 minutes together this season.
The fact they’ve been able to get through the adversity of constant injuries to their core should have more people talking about them but instead, the focus has been on the eighth place Nets, defending champion Bucks, and Joel Embiid – James Harden 76ers.
That probably suits the Heat just fine because they don’t care who they play. They’re tough and were built for the postseason so performing so well in the regular season is all just gravy.
Caleb Martin (Achilles), and Tyler Herro (knee) were upgraded to probable while Dewayne Dedmon (back) is questionable for Friday. Markieff Morris (conditioning) and Victor Oladipo (knee) are out indefinitely.
New York Knicks
The big news out of New York is Kemba Walker has been shut down for the season to address his ailing knee and perhaps to appease Tom Thibodeau who never seemed happy with how he fit into his system.
Leon Rose offered a statement implying it was Walker’s decision:
“We fully support Kemba’s decision to shut it down for the remainder of the season and to use this time to prepare for next season. His long-term success on the court remains our priority.”
With Derrick Rose still out that means the onus will shift back to Alec Burkes and developing Quintin Grimes and perhaps could equate to more playing time for Cam Reddish as Thibs shifts to integrating another player he hasn’t exactly embraced.
RJ Barrett (ankle) is questionable, Nerlens Noel (knee) was upgraded to questionable and Derrick Rose (ankle) was downgraded to doubtful for Friday while Kemba Walker (knee) is out for the season.

Free Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks NBA Prediction
The Walker news could be a sign the Knicks are raising the white flag and will give up their chase to get a play-in seed or it could be a coincidence.
Either way, it’s clear this Knicks squad needs major tweaks and perhaps this year was a bit of a gift because they overachieved last season and then made abrupt personnel changes that erased what made them successful.
It won’t matter what choice they make because the Heat are intent on winning and their identity unlike the Knicks is fully cemented.
