The fourth-seeded Indiana Pacers and fifth-seeded Miami Heat begin their first-round series on Tuesday. It’s the clubs’ third game in eight days as they played twice in the final week of the seeding games.
The narrative was focused on Jimmy Butler and T.J. Warren but it failed to live up to the hype and Butler was quick to bury it heading into this series.
Miami Heat
It didn’t seem like a big deal to the Heat what seed they had – and why should it? There is no homecourt and they’ve owned the Pacers.
The one game Indy won (the last seeding game) Miami rested the majority of their core.
Although the Heat had a meager 3-5 record in the bubble the team took care of two out of the three games they wanted early by beating the Celtics and the first Pacers game.
They fought the Raptors to the horn before succumbing but that was the game presumably when Jimmy Butler hurt his foot since he didn’t play in the next three games.
In the bubble, per 100 possessions the Heat ranked 12th offensively (110.0), ninth defensively (110.1), and 10th in net differential (minus -0.1). On the full season, their ratings are seventh (111.9), 12th (109.3), and seventh (plus +2.3) respectively.
Miami has six key players dealing with bumps and bruises including Butler (foot), Bam Adebayo/Jae Crowder (knee), Goran Dragic (ankle), and Andre Iguodala (hip) with all five expected to play. Derrick Jones Jr. (neck) who took a hard hit Friday is questionable.
Indiana Pacers
Every time this Pacers squad gets an opportunity to make excuses they double down. Victor Oladipo wasn’t sure he’d play in the bubble but changed his mind.
Just as he returned Indy lost their All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis with plantar fasciitis.
In spite of the Pacers depth taking a hit and T.J. Warren the bubble breakout star also nursing plantar fasciitis, Indiana inexplicably delivered a 6-2 record in the bubble.
Of the middle tier of teams, the Pacers could face the Heat were the worst draw for them. Miami hasn’t just won the series they’ve done it with seeming ease.
Aside from Warren dealing with his sore foot and Sabonis out, Myles Turner is nursing both neck and wrist injuries. All but Sabonis are expected to play.
In the bubble, per 100 possessions the Pacers ranked 16th offensively (107.6), third defensively (105.7), and eighth in net differential (+1.8). On the full season, their ratings are 19th (109.5), sixth (107.5), and 13th (+1.9) respectively.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Over is 10-3 in MIA last 13 games as a favorite.
- IND are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
- MIA are 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings
Free Miami Heat vs. Indiana Pacers NBA Prediction:
One thing about this Pacers squads is you can never count them out. But they will be in tough based on missing Domantas Sabonis.
Their depth doesn’t match the Heat and if we base how Jimmy Butler leads this group and Bam Adebayo does a bit of everything this could be a quick series.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Heat -4.0
The Pacers are scrappy, gritty, and never quit. They’ll fight to the bitter end, but I can’t stress how bad this matchup is for Indiana.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
