Thursday, October 27th, finds the Miami Heat playing the Golden State Warriors for the first time this season and will complete their regular-season series in Miami on November 1st.
The Warriors last played on Tuesday getting thumped by the Suns in a tech-filled battle. Miami began a three-game road trip in Portland with a 119-98 victory on the front side of a back-to-back set and will finish the trip in Sacramento on Saturday.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Warriors winning both contests. The Warriors have won 35 of the 67 matches played between the clubs all-time.
Miami Heat
Although the Heat began the season on their home court the schedule makers didn’t do them any favors as they faced the Bulls, Celtics, and Raptors twice in a row.
Their lone win from that quartet of matches occurred in the Saturday match versus Toronto who didn’t arrive in Miami until 4:00 am but still mounted a comeback almost erasing the 24-point lead (Heat hung on to win by three).
Prior to the match Wednesday, the Heat were ranked 28th offensively which wouldn’t be as critical if they were playing to their typical defensive prowess but they rank 17th on that side of the floor.
It’s hard to decipher if this is just a slow start, the level of opponents, or if something else is amiss. Bam Adebayo and Kyle Lowry certainly have both struggled early particularly offensively.
Miami has an odd schedule to start the season filled with a ton of 2022 playoff teams and copious matches against the same teams. Typically the opposite coast games are split up but the Heat will complete their series versus the Warriors, Blazers, and Kings all in the next seven games.
Victor Oladipo (knee) and Omer Yurtseven (ankle) were both downgraded to out for Wednesday and likely won’t play Thursday either.
Golden State Warriors
The game versus the Suns took on a life of its own. It was a chippy affair with the Suns bringing it on the court both with their shots and their mouths.
Devin Booker was talking a ton and Klay Thompson took umbrage with his chirping. It didn’t help that the officials were giving the Suns free throws for minor fouls but letting the Suns aggressively defend without fouls called.
That led to seven technicals being assessed in the third frame alone and culminated with Klay Thompson’s ejection – – the first of his career. In fairness, Thompson wasn’t shooting the ball well but as good as Booker was playing the fact he was getting a friendlier whistle didn’t hurt.
In the end, he took three fewer free throws than the entire Warriors team (14 to 17). Steph Curry was the only Warriors starter to get to the line while every Suns starter and two reserves took free throws that equated to double the trips (34 to 17) to the charity stripe.
These types of games happen but it’s not likely the Warriors are sweating the loss. Sure they’d rather win but the goal is to keep their veteran core rested and healthy and for the youngsters to gain experience to use as they attempt to repeat in the spring.
One notable is the Warriors’ defense hasn’t been up to par yet. The Lakers scored the fewest points (109) against them but they’ve allowed 128, 125, and 134 in their other three matches. Expect more attention paid to that dynamic in the coming games.
