Miami has started the season hot. It blew-out the Cavaliers on Wednesday to advance to 10–3 and win its fourth in a row.
Given all the winning and all the days off the Heat has had of late (it had three days off following its last loss and three days off prior to Wednesday’s win), it hasn’t lost a game since Nov. 8.
Jimmy Butler is the hungry leader the team has lacked since the championship days but this still looks like a roster that will fall short in the postseason, no matter how many games it wins in the regular season.
That sounds a little discouraging, though. This is a good team with Justise Winslow and Bam Adebayo, who are both still improving, and a rookie in Kendrick Nunn who hasn’t slowed down yet. (There’s still a long way to go.)
Goran Dragic is the sneaky second banana to Butler. He’s having a bounce-back season off the bench, where he’s comfortable and scoring over sixteen points per game. If both he and Butler stay healthy all season and play at or close to all-star level, it lets the younger guys I named above to slide into roles they’re comfortable with.
The Bulls are overmatched but probably won’t get blown away on their home floor.
They’re just 4–10 and, unlike the Heat, don’t have the leader(s) nor the experience to turn to. But what they do have is some skillful youth and, as a result, are only being outscored by four points per game so far, despite a few big losses recently to Milwaukee (two) and Houston.
Mixed in are are two blowout wins of the Knicks and Hawks. Zach LaVine is getting twenty points per game but shooting under fifty percent, effective, from the field to get there.
Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. make a nice big man tandem and average twenty-seven and seventeen, combined.
But Otto Porter, who played well last season after arriving in Chicago and contributed to the team’s late-season success, won’t be on his player option, in which he’ll be playing for a new contract, until next season. He’s already out with a bad foot.
