The first-round playoff series between the eighth-seeded Miami Heat and top-seeded Boston Celtics continues on Wednesday. Boston returns to TD Garden seeking the Gentleman’s sweep after winning 102-88 in Game 4.
Season Series
The clubs split their four meetings last season each winning once at home and once on the road while the Celtics swept the season series this year. Boston holds the all-time record between the squads with 83 victories in 136 matches.
These teams have met six prior times in the postseason with the Heat holding a 4-2 advantage. The last time they met in 2023 Miami jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Boston rallied to win the next three games before the Heat took Game 7 to move on to the NBA Finals.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, on Tuesday, April 30th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Wednesday, May 1st.
Miami Heat
Bam Adebayo spoke to his teammates imploring them to raise their level of play in Game 4. Not that the message fell on deaf ears, but his teammates weren’t able to match the Celtics production.
Adebayo took his own message to heart though registering a massive double-double of 25 points and 17 rebounds but only Tyler Herro (19) and Caleb Martin (18) joined him in breaking double-figure scoring.
In fairness, Game 2 was an outlier when the Heat were on fire from deep dropping 23 perimeter shots. Since that game, the Heat have shot 18 for 61 from behind the arc or 29.5 percent.
Heat Stats
Miami ranks 21st offensively (113.3) and fifth defensively (111.5) with a plus net differential of +1.8 ranking in a tie for 16th overall.
Through three games of the playoffs, the Heat ranks 14th offensively (103.9) and 11th defensively (116.0) with a minus -12.1 net differential also ranking 14th.
The Heat rode the middle ground this season against the spread with a 43-43-2 record through 88 matches.
Heat Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Jimmy Butler, SG (OUT indefinitely— MCL)
- Terry Rozier, PG (OUT indefinitely — neck)
- Josh Richardson, SG (OUT for season— shoulder)
Boston Celtics
Calf injuries are becoming problematic for the two Finals favorites in the association. The difference for Denver’s Jamal Murray is he was able to play through his injury but the East favorite wasn’t as lucky.
The Celtics got the victory but it came at a great cost as Kristaps Porzingis had to leave the game and was seen exiting the arena in a walking boot.
Derrick White had a career playoff performance with 38 points hitting eight deep balls. It was an off night for Jayson Tatum (5 of 14) and Jaylen Brown (7 of 18) who combined to shoot 12 of 32.
Celtics Stats
Boston ranks first overall offensively (122.2) and are second defensively (110.6) while registering a net differential of plus +111.7 which also ranks first overall.
Through two games of the playoffs, the Celtics rank sixth offensively (116.0) and third defensively (1o3.9) with a plus +12.1 net differential also ranking third.
In terms of the Celtics’ performance against the spread, they offer a 44-37-5 record through 86 matches.
Celtics Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Kristaps Porzingis, PF (left last game/questionable — calf)

Free Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Although Porzingis’ injury won’t stop the Celtics from clinching this series (or even the semis) there will be concern about how it impacts the team moving forward.
You can bet the Knicks and Pacers(who I believe have the best chance to reach the Eastern Conference Finals) are licking their lips over this news because the Celts’ x-factor is Porzingis.
Boston doesn’t have a ton of depth so the loss of Zinger would put a ton of pressure on the aging Al Horford and against opponents with scoring big men.
As for this series, it’s likely the Celtics complete the Gentleman’s sweep Wednesday, despite the Heat being able to play freely since they aren’t expected to win again.
