Playing in their second match of the 2023-24 season the Miami Heat are on the road to their hosts the Boston Celtics. The Heat squeaked out a 103-102 victory versus the Detroit Pistons in their season opener while the Celtics defeated the Knicks 108-104.
Season Series
The clubs split their four meetings last season each winning once at home and once on the road. Boston holds the all-time record between the squads with 80 victories in 133 matches.
The last time the teams met was in the postseason when the Heat rallied from three straight losses to beat Boston in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Miami Heat
Pat Riley spent the offseason trying to make a deal to bring Damian Lillard to Miami. Despite the Heat being his desired landing spot, the veteran front office executive couldn’t put together an enticing enough deal to land the sharpshooter.
In fact, each of Lillard, Bradley Beal, and Jrue Holiday cited Miami as a favored landing spot but the Blazers and Wizards weren’t excited about the package Riley had to offer (or the three-team deals the Heat pitched).
Additionally, Erik Spoelstra will have to navigate Tyler Herro’s feelings since he was the cornerstone piece offered in deals but he remains in Miami with understandably a bit of a chip on his shoulder.
Factor in core contributors Max Strus and Gabe Vincent exited in free agency which will impact both the starting rotation and depth of the Heat this season. Josh Richardson and Thomas Bryant are the key additions plus draft prospect Jaime Jaquez Jr.
Heat Stats
Miami played five preseason games finishing with a 2-3 record. Last season they finished ranking 25th on offense (112.3), and ninth on defense (112.8) while they registered the 21st-ranked net rating (minus -0.5).
The Heat were also one of the more plodding teams with the 29th-ranked pace.
Heat Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Caleb Martin SG (probable –knee)
- Duncan Robinson PF (probable –foot)
- Josh Richardson SG (OUT — foot)
- Haywood Highsmith SG (OUT indefinitely — MCL)
- Jaime Jaquez Jr. SF (probable — groin)
Boston Celtics
On the road for the season opener, the Celtics faced a rabid Madison Square Garden crowd and were trailing late in the match. However, in clutch time it was the Celts who’s talent shone through as they erased a six-point deficit to pull out the victory.
It wasn’t a statement win, but it does highlight the sheer talent on the reformulated squad with each of the new additions contributing to the win.
While Jayson Tatum led the scoring (34 points, 11 rebounds) Kristaps Porzingis finished with 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks as Jrue Holiday offered his typical Swiss army knife contributions of 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.
Celtics Stats
Boston played five preseason games finishing with a 4-1 record. Last season they finished ranking second both on offense (117.3), and defense (110.6) while they registered the best net rating (plus +6.7).

Free Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Although the teams split the season series last year the Heat have won the matches that mattered most like Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Jimmy Butler specifically has the Celtics number but with the addition of Jrue Holiday, it may be Butler who has his hands full trying to score against the defensive specialist.
The sheer size of the Celtics will be problematic for Miami, particularly with the starting lineups in the frontcourt with 6’9″ Bam Adebayo occupying the center position.
Miami coughed up a 19-point lead to the Pistons barely clinging to victory but Boston is a different level of competition. With the Bean Town crew playing in their home opener I like them to stay unbeaten but I’m antsy to give that extra half-point so I’ll take the Heat to keep it within 7.5 points.
