Monday, January 31st, 2022, the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics play for the second of three meetings this season. Boston won the initial meeting 95-78 on November 4th. The teams will complete the season series on March 30th with Boston hosting.
Both teams last played Saturday in vastly different scenarios. Miami was involved in a marathon three-overtime match that they lost 120-124 to the Raptors while the Celtics had an easier 107-97 victory versus a shorthanded Pelicans squad.
In history, the Celtics own the advantage winning 77 of the clubs’ 127 meetings. Last season the teams played three times with the Heat taking two of the three contests.
Miami Heat
This will be the third game in four nights for the Heat who arrive in Boston fatigued following arguably the game of the season that required three overtime frames to decide and unfortunately for Miami went to the Raptors.
Miami was playing on consecutive nights and on top of that logged major minutes. Albeit they didn’t match the Raptors starters who all played between 54 and 57 minutes but were close with Jimmy Bulter playing 52 and four others logging between 41 and 45 minutes.
Miami might have lost more than the game as Jimmy Butler tweaked his ankle and is questionable Monday. He was spectacular versus Toronto posting a triple-double of 37 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists plus three steals, and two blocks.
Bam Adebayo registered a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds also collecting three steals and two blocks. But most of the support staff who’ve been so solid this season struggled either due to fatigue or the Raptors defense.
Tyler Herro was 5 of 22, Duncan Robinson was 0 of 5 and PJ Tucker was 4 of 12. Gabe Vincent (17) and Max Strus (11) hit half of the Heat’s 16 perimeter shots on a night when they couldn’t buy a bucket from deep (16 of 50).
Kyle Lowry (personal) has missed the last seven games and is out again on Monday. Jimmy Butler (ankle) and KZ Okpala (wrist) are questionable for Monday. Markieff Morris (neck) and Victor Oladipo (knee) are out indefinitely.
Boston Celtics
The recent run of the Celtics can be viewed in two different ways and in many ways a microcosm of their season. On one hand, they’ve won three of four and eight of 12.
Looking at it another way, they are three and three through the last six and continue to cough up double-digit fourth-quarter leads like they did in the loss to the Blazers.
Suffice to say, the Celtics look like a title contender one night and a discombobulated mess the next. They boast two of the best young stars in the league but their style remains a mystery.
I couldn’t tell you with any confidence what their identity is aside from being consistently inconsistent. The question is how much of that is a factor of the support staff surrounding Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown and how much falls on the duo’s shoulders?
Brad Stevens and Ime Udoka will have to answer those questions leading into the February 10th trade deadline because they aren’t simply trying to build chemistry there are definitive bad habits that need to be fixed regardless of who laces them up.
The worst of which is their knack for coughing up leads in crunch time and vacillating efforts from one night to the next.
Romeo Langford (heel) is questionable for Monday. PJ Dozier (knee) and Bol Bol (foot) are both out indefinitely following surgeries.

If Boston was entering off a loss I’d feel more confident. Moreover, the Heat wants to retain the top seed and has already lost once to Boston with only three games in the series so need to win this game to force the tie-break decision in the final meeting.
If Butler can’t go and with Lowry still out that should theoretically favor the Celtics who also boast the 10th ranked perimeter defense which they’ll need to limit Miami who possesses the league’s top-ranked perimeter efficiency.
That becomes especially true if Butler doesn’t play since the youngsters will get more minutes with each of Herro, Strus, Vincent, and Martin taking more shots in his absence which will primarily be from deep.
Two games ago Boston allowed Atlanta to shoot 38.7% and if they do that versus the Heat – it’s game over.
