This is the first meeting between the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors this season. With that reality, the pandemic is playing spoiler to Marc Gasol and Jonas Valanciunas returns to each other’s former arenas.
Even in the bubble, no doubt it will be an emotional event for both big men.
Last season the Raptors won both games (both played prior to the trade) and hold a four-game win streak over the Grizzlies.
Memphis Grizzlies
After losing Jaren Jackson Jr. to a torn meniscus and their first four ‘seeded’ games Memphis registered their first win against the Thunder. Trailing by 12 points after the first quarter, the Grizzlies charged back and won every other quarter by double-figures.
Without Steven Adams available to contend with Jonas Valanciunas he delivered a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Dillon Brooks led the way with 22 points while Ja Morant came one assist shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine assists.
Brandon Clarke (12), Gorgui Dieng (12), and Grayson Allen (11) were the other double-figure contributors.
All five teams in the chase pack are still in the mix with only the Suns not playing on Sunday.
The good news is the Blazers’ loss to the Clippers ensured Memphis will at least finish with one of the two play-in slots but are clearly desirous of the eighth seed so they’ll only have to win once.
Toronto Raptors
A seven-game win streak that stretched back pre-hiatus came to an end with the Raptors’ loss to the Celtics. Toronto had been the best defensive team in the bubble prior to Boston breaking out for 122 points.
Another victory by the Raptors or loss by the Celtics will cement the second seed for Toronto.
Since January 12th, the Raptors are 24-5 and throughout the season seldom lose consecutive games. In fact, it’s happened three times in total.
Toronto’s defense has looked sharp as the Raptors held the Lakers and Magic under 100 points and the Magic to 103 points.
The Raptors offense hasn’t found its rhythm yet which may be a factor of the team finally having everyone healthy combined with playing some top-level defenses.
With this game mattering so much to Marc Gasol it won’t be surprising if Nick Nurse and Kyle Lowry have their squad laser-focused on capturing the victory in his honor.
