Wednesday, November 9th, the Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs play the first of four scheduled meetings this season. Memphis will host games on January 9th and 11th while the Spurs will host the final meeting on March 17th.
Both teams last played on Monday with Memphis losing 106-109 to the Celtics while the Spurs lost 109-115 to the Nuggets.
Last season the clubs played four times with the Grizzlies sweeping the series and on a current six-game win streak versus San Antonio. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 74 wins in 106 matches versus the Grizzlies.
Memphis Grizzlies
Although the Grizzlies lost Monday, they never conceded, battling back on numerous occasions and gave themselves a chance to extend the match.
The best Grizzly player had the ball in his hands on the final shot with an opportunity to force overtime but Ja Morant slipped on presumably a wet spot on the court and with no time to recover threw up a backward shot.
It had no shot of going in and time expired. Morant finished with 30 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists.
The 23-year-old is averaging 28.5 points, 7.1 assists, and 5.7 rebounds. He’s shooting 45.7% from deep on 4.6 attempts and getting to the line for 8.9 free throws per game.
Memphis seemed to prioritize offense early but in the last few matches, there has been a concerted effort to up the defensive intensity.
A dive into the numbers highlights Memphis scores 113.5 points per game which ranks 12th. The Grizzlies shoot 46.7% from the field and 38.6% from the perimeter which ranks 19th and seventh respectively.
On defense, the Grizzlies allow opponents to score 112.4 points per game which rank 16th (a notable improvement as they’ve shaved off over seven points and risen 10 ranking spots in the past week).
They hold foes to 46.2 percent from the field (13th) and 35.2 percent from the perimeter (14th).
Steven Adams (ankle) is questionable for Wednesday. Ziaire Williams (knee – mid-Dec) Jaren Jackson Jr. (foot – late Dec) and Danny Green (ACL -mid-Feb) are out indefinitely.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs may well be toying with us as they prepare to tank at some point this season and defensively they’re already playing their role.
But make no mistake Gregg Popovich has a few gems that would easily shift from tankers to contenders with the right generational cornerstone via this 2023 draft.
Keldon Johnson is one such diamond in the rough who is putting up career-best numbers and would easily fit into the role of second or third banana on a contending squad. He offered 30 points on 12 of 20 shooting along with five rebounds, two assists,s and two steals in the loss Monday.
Pops is working his magic on Josh Richardson too, a player who never seemed to find his niche, this being his fifth landing spot in his seven years as a pro.
He looks happy and comfortable with this group which is translating on the hardwood as he’s shooting 41.7% from deep on 4.8 attempts per game and appears content playing his role.
The Spurs allow 120.6 points per game which is tied with the Warriors in last place. They also rank dead last for opponent field goal percentage (50.8%) and 25th for opponent perimeter percentage (37.9%).
San Antonio is further ahead offensively scoring 112.9 points per game ranking 14th while shooting 46.8 percent from the field (17th) and 38.4 percent from deep ranking eighth-best.
Romeo Langford (toe) is probable and Doug McDermott (ankle) is questionable for Wednesday. Zach Collins (leg) and Blake Wesley (knee) are out indefinitely.

Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. San Antonio Spurs NBA Analysis:
Again, the Grizzlies sure looked to be making a concerted effort to improve their defense in the last few matches, and while the Spurs present issues (especially if Adams can’t go) I like them to rebound in this match and cover the spread.
