Although the opening night of the restart is serving up the heavy hitters no first game in the schedule could have a greater impact than this match. The Blazers are one of five teams in the chase pack seeking to capture the ninth seed and gain access to the play-in tournament.
A loss by the Blazers this early to the Grizzlies could define the path for both clubs. Conversely, a victory could fuel the Blazers’ efforts since they hold a marginal edge over the Pelicans and Kings based on win percentage.
Memphis Grizzlies
This young Grizzlies crew overachieved expectations defying the odds to build a 3.5 game lead over their nearest competitors in the West.
Unfortunately, the hiatus changed the dynamics of how the regular season will finish and that means Memphis will need to gain an extra game padding in the win column over the three teams directly behind them to avoid the play-in tourney.
Even if one of the five teams does manage to meet the parameters the opponent would have to win twice to the Grizzlies once, but it’s still something Memphis would prefer to avoid.
The 20-year old Ja Morant who’ll turn 21 in 10 days is a lock to win Rookie of the Year. The youngster has assumed the leadership reigns captaining his squad with unbridled enthusiasm and a competitive drive more akin to a grizzled vet like Chris Paul than of his own peer group.
It was hoped Justise Winslow would add depth and a veteran voice but his hip rendered him out for the season and now Tyus Jones will miss a week due to a knee injury and Dillon Brooks is questionable nursing a sore groin.
Portland Trail Blazers
Superstar Damian Lillard fought hard for the bubble to include an opportunity for his Blazers to play their way into the playoffs. After reaching the Western Conference Finals last season the Blazers were decimated by injury and struggled to gain a playoff berth this year.
Portland preferred the 20 team style bracket tournament but will take what they can get. They hold a slight edge over the other four chase pack teams based on playing more games and a slight edge in win percentage.
The more than four-month layoff also allowed big men Jusuf Nurkic and Zach Collins to return providing the club with depth in the frontcourt to pair with their dynamic backcourt.
Ironically, it’s Lillard now who is nursing an injury as he deals with foot inflammation but is probable to play.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Grizzlies are 5-4-1 ATS in their last 10 meetings
- The teams are 5-5 in the last 10 head to head contests
- Over Under is 4-6 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Memphis Grizzlies vs. Portland Trail Blazers NBA Prediction:
The Blazers enter this match healthier than the Grizzlies and in spite of their naive enthusiasm, the Grizzlies will be in tough especially if Brooks and Jones both can’t go and if Lillard can.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Blazers -2
In a showdown of present-day versus the future superstar point guards, Lillard’s crew has too much experience and a healthier roster. Still, don’t expect Dame to be waving goodbye in the face of anyone – – at least not yet.
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
