Phoenix Suns
Phoenix has lost five in a row and is safely in that bottom three, which guarantees it the best chance at winning the NBA’s Draft Lottery for a second year in a row.
Last year’s prize, DeAndre Ayton, has played 70 games this season and looks like he’ll finish with a double-double average with a little over 16 points and rebounds. His assists and turnovers are even, too.

You can bet he’ll work on his range in the offseason and start chucking threes soon enough. He hasn’t been a threat from outside this season, though he claims he has the range in practice. It would also be advisable, though it’s less certain that he will, to work on his passing and ball protection to get that assist-to-turnover ratio into the black.

The Suns are going to get a big name in the draft and they’ll suddenly get intriguing, at least on paper. They could feature a trio of Ayton, Devin Booker, and someone like RJ Barrett, though they have had enough Lottery picks of late that should have already matured.
There won’t be much financial flexibility to work with in the offseason. The Suns took on Tyler Johnson, who will make nearly $20 million next season in the final year of his deal, and will start paying Booker big bucks starting next season.
Dragan Bender will be a free agent and it will be interesting to see where he lands, if it’s anywhere that can put his skills to use, unlike what the Suns were able to do.
Memphis Grizzlies
Currently, six teams are worse than Memphis in the NBA. That lines the Grizzlies up for a middle pick in the Lottery. It’s better than being at the end, I guess.
It’s been a hard year for the franchise, having let go of Marc Gasol. It feels like the same fate could come for Mike Conley Jr., who is signed for the next two seasons at over $66 million, too.

As things stand now, the Grizzlies don’t have much financial flexibility going into the offseason, either. Jonas Valanciunas, Chandler Parsons, and Avery Bradley are all owed big salaries so it could be another lost year for Memphis in 2019-2020.
The most important player on the roster is Jaren Jackson Jr., the first round pick from a year ago. He is averaging close to 14 points per game on pretty good shooting splits (.55, .36, .77) but he hasn’t played since the All-Star Break. He may end up finishing with those numbers if the Grizzlies choose to just keep him on the sideline with what must be a pretty bad leg bruise.
